Richard J. Greten, 85, of Weehawken, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 3, 2026, after a brief battle with leukemia. He faced his illness with the same quiet strength and dignity that defined his life.
Born in Jersey City, New Jersey, Richard proudly served his country in the United States Navy as a Hospital Corpsman Third Class before being honorably discharged in 1963. He was a member of the Weehawken Elks Lodge No. 1456.
Known as "Richie" to his friends and "Uncle Richie" to the kids in his life, he had a way of making everyone feel like family. Over the years, he became a grandfather figure, offering a steady presence and lots of encouragement in everything they did.
Richie found one of the most rewarding chapters of his life working for the Township of Weehawken for more than 25 years. He took great pride in caring for the sports fields, parks, walking paths, and waterfront along the Hudson River and enjoyed the opportunity to interact with residents and visitors. Every day he unlocked the gates at 5 a.m. for walkers and joggers, and was ready with a friendly greeting or conversation.
Richie devoted 25 years to coaching with the Weehawken Recreation, Scott's All-Stars, from 1989 to 2013. To his fellow coaches and generations of young players, he was a mentor and friend. He believed baseball was about more than wins and losses, using the game to teach sportsmanship, humility, and teamwork both on and off the field.
Richie treasured spending time with family and friends at the Jersey Shore and in Atlantic City, especially the Borgata. He was also an avid sports fan, he was almost always watching a game on television. He rarely missed a New York Rangers game and faithfully followed horse racing throughout the East Coast. Whether at the Shore or watching sports, Richie appreciated life's simple pleasures.
Richie's greatest legacy was the family and friendships he leaves behind. He is survived by his beloved wife, Anna Greten (née Gagliardi); his loving daughters, Denise Greten and Nicole Greten; and Eric Hammer, who was like a son to him. He was predeceased by his parents, Helen and John Greten, and his sister, Ruthann Perry.
A committal service with military honors will take place at Fairview Mausoleum, Fairview, New Jersey, on Thursday, July 9, at 11:00 a.m.
