Long time Shawnee resident, Newton Dale Sloat joined his beloved, Marianne, in heaven on June 18, 2018. Newton was born on February 15, 1936 to Arthur James and Thelma Naomi Sloat in Concho, Oklahoma. Newton graduated from Shawnee High School in 1953 and promptly enlisted in the United States Army. After basic, Newton volunteered to be a Paratrooper and was assigned to the 503rd Airborne Infantry Regiment of the 11th Airborne Division at Campbell, KY where he attended jump school. Newt was trained as a Morse Code Radio operator, stationed in Munich, Germany from January, 1956 until spring of 1957, when he was honorably discharged. Sloat completed more than twenty jumps as a paratrooper. Sloat continued jumping as a civilian, logging more than a hundred jumps. Newt often spoke fondly of his time in the service, where he made many lifelong friends like Russ, Gerald and Frank, to name only a few. Newton married Marianne Smika on October 23, 1959; they celebrated fifty years together in 2009. Newton enjoyed coaching little league baseball in the 70’s and continued to love sports. Newt spent 31 years as a civil servant at Tinker Air Force Base, retired and started his second career in nursing. After graduation, Newt went to work with The Absentee Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma, practicing for 17 years until retiring again in 2011.
Newton was preceded in death by his wife, Marianne, two sons, Gregory Dale Sloat and Dale Allen Sloat, his parents, Arthur and Thelma Sloat, his sister, Frankie Jeanne and nephew Donald Gene.
Newton is survived by his daughter, Lezlie of Oklahoma City; his son, Brett of Kansas City, Kansas; grandchildren Ryan, Chelsey and Kaleigh O’Toole, Mattison Oney and Chad Morrow; ten great grandchildren, Angel, Mileigh, Bryson, Rylin, Hayden, Delaney, Spencer, Olivia, Kinley and Maggie Rose; siblings Wayne, Zelda, Jerry and Terri; and many nieces and nephews.
Newton may be viewed all day Friday, June 22 at Resthaven Funeral Home. Memorial service will be held at Saint Benedict Catholic Church on Saturday, June 23 at 1:00 pm. Burial immediately after at Calvary Cemetery.
