Obituary of Dr. Richard "Dick" Gordon Canham
Dr. Richard “Dick” Gordon Canham went to be with the Lord on September 19, 2022. Dick was born August 30, 1928 in Arlington Virginia to Walter G. and Goldie Alice (Sweet) Canham. Dick received a PhD and was a professor of chemistry, physics, and natural science. Dick taught one of the Apollo Astronauts and was even invited to a launch. In his free time, Dick loved to watch trains and Baseball. He loved doing crossword puzzles and travelling. Dick had a love of nature, including hiking, the National Parks, and was active with his sons in the Boy Scouts. Dick’s love of God found fulfillment as a member of First Baptist Church and service behind the scenes. On August 23, 1952, Dick married the love of his life, Shirley W. Canham, in Annapolis, Maryland. They went on to have three children, Randolph, Andy, and Susan. Dick is preceded in death by his wife Shirley W. Canham, parents Walter G. and Goldie Alice (Sweet) Canham, brothers Walter Canham, Burton “Burt” Canham, and Robert “Bob” Canham. Dick is survived by son Randolph Canham and wife Vickie of Kentucky, son Andy Canham and wife Jeanette of Tennessee, daughter Susan Canham of Oklahoma, sister in law Betty Canham of Oklahoma, sister in law Janie Smith of Virginia, and a multitude of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Dick will always be fondly remembered by the bow ties he wore to class every day for 28 years, and for his natural ability with words and use of puns. A Visitation will be held Saturday, September 24, 2022, from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM at Resthaven Funeral Home. A Funeral Service will be held Monday, September 26, 2022, at 10:00 AM at Resthaven Funeral Home with burial to follow at Resthaven Memorial Park.
