Roy Dean Hawkins passed away peacefully on November 10, 2021, at his home in Shawnee, OK. He had fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith. Now he has a heavenly body with no pain, and is forever with Jesus, his Lord and King.
Roy was born December 25, 1942, in Parks, Arkansas. He graduated from Sand Springs High School in 1960. He served in the United States Air Force from 1960-1964 and in the Reserves for 2 years. He married his high-school sweetheart Judith Palmer in 1964. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1968 with a B.A. in History and Philosophy, from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1972 with a Master of Divinity degree, and from Escuela de Idiomas with a degree in Spanish Language Study. He became an ordained minister in 1973.
Roy was a career missionary with the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention from 1973 to 2008. He had previously served with the Home Mission Board in 1968 in Florida and as Associate Pastor of First Baptist Church, Archer City, Texas for 2 years. After retiring from the IMB, he served as a Church Planter for the Oklahoma Baptists (Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma) from 2010-2015.
His hobbies included gunsmithing and fishing. He let every server at every restaurant he ever visited know that God loved them, and he always prayed for them right there at the table before he left.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Ray Hawkins.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Judith, their 2 children and 4 grandchildren: son Charles Hawkins of Shawnee, Oklahoma (wife Elaine Hawkins, their children Christopher Hawkins of Midwest City, Audrey Hawkins of Stillwater, and Jonathan Hawkins of the home); son Carl Hawkins of Jacksonville, Florida (wife Sharon Hawkins, their daughter Janell Hawkins)
The service may be viewed on the University Baptist Church YouTube channel.
The family wishes to thank Angelic Family Hospice of Shawnee, Oklahoma, for their dedicated, excellent care of Roy these last four months, even until the last moment of his life. The family is also deeply grateful for all those who have so faithfully lifted Roy and the family up in prayer during Roy’s illness.
