May 25, 1933 – January 14, 2020
Sylvester Leon Rigney, 86, of Shawnee passed away January 14th, 2020. Born May, 25th, 1933 in Sacred Heart, Oklahoma to Levert and Francess Rigney.
Sylvester was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. In his earlier days he enjoyed navigating the great sky - flying from California to Oklahoma and Minnesota. He lived his life as a machinist at heart and owned a machine shop until his retirement. Sylvester always said he was grateful to make a living doing what he loves. Following his retirement, Syl continued to enjoy working with his hands building scale model engines. He loved to share his passion with his sons, working alongside them in his workshop. Sylvester enjoyed traveling with his late wife, brothers and sisters. Bluegrass music was included in the soundtrack of his life; he enjoyed spending time at bluegrass festivals just pickin' and grinnin'. He spent many afternoons and evenings playing cards, Shanghai in particular. He was always ready to ask "Who's deal is it?" It is true to say Sylvester lived a full, honest, and hard-working life.
Those left to cherish his memory are sons: Dr. Michael Rigney and wife Michelle, Mark Rigney, Stephen Rigney and wife Phyllis, Philip Rigney, and Lloyd Rigney and wife Cindy; grandchildren: Manny Smallwood, Wayne Manley, Megan Bradford, Heather McElfresh, Shawna Selby, Amanda Rigney, Sean Rigney, Nichole Boise, Christopher Rigney and Alex Rigney; 23 great grandchildren; siblings: Bill Rigney and wife Beth, Bertha Hawkins, Sheila Albers and husband Burt, and Shirley Sumner and husband Andy. Sylvester was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Denise Rigney; parents; brothers: June and Chris Rigney and wife Donna; brother-in-law, Tommy Hawkins; and granddaughter, Katharine Rigney.

I only knew Syl for a short time, but in that period of time he was a very gracious man. I’ve known his son, Steve, for several years & I admire him so much knowing he was brought up in a loving home.
