Donald (Don) Wayne Waltrip, 89, went home to his Heavenly Father on Saturday, February 28, 2026. Born in Louisville, Kentucky, Don was the son of Russell and Evelyn Waltrip. He lived a long life defined by love, kindness, and unwavering devotion to his family. It was clear to all who knew him that nothing meant more to Don than his family and friends.
During his childhood, Don lived in parts of New York as his family followed his father’s career. After several years, they returned home to Kentucky, where Don remained for the rest of his life. Whether in New York or Kentucky, he was always a devoted and enthusiastic Kentucky Wildcat fan.
In his early adulthood, Don played professional baseball in the Brooklyn Dodgers organization. After a couple of years, he retired from baseball and began a long and successful career with Akzo Nobel, Inc., serving in multiple roles within the research and development division where he was credited for 3 U.S. patents. He retired in 1997 following a career marked by dedication and hard work.
Don was an extraordinarily devoted husband and father. In 1958, he married the love of his life, Billie Mueller Waltrip. Their marriage spanned 68 beautiful years and remained strong until his passing. Don’s love for Billie ran deep, and he was immensely proud to be her husband for the greater part of his life.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Billie; his son, Donald Waltrip (Melissa); his daughter, Dana Moore (Dwight); his brother, Michael Waltrip (Alice); nine grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Evelyn Waltrip; his sister, Kathy Staples; his cherished granddaughter, Jamie Lee Burke; and his daughter, Diane Burke.
Don’s strength, generosity, and steadfast love for his family and friends will live on in the many lives he touched throughout his 89 years. He will be forever missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Funeral service will be conducted on Saturday, March 7, 2026, at 5:00 pm in the chapel of Schoppenhorst, Underwood & Brooks Funeral Home (Preston Hwy. at Brooks Rd.) with cremation to follow. Family and friends may pay their respects on Saturday, March 7, 2026, from 1:00 pm until the time of service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Don’s honor to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
