Dorotha "Dorothy"Mae Payne, age 92, of Louisville returned to her Heavenly Father on Tuesday, September 8, 2026. She was born in Allen County, Kentucky on August 10, 1934, to the late Ewell and Juanita Emmitt.
Dorothy was a mom, above all others, always putting her family first. She raised 4 strong, independent and loving children. She taught them how to cook and how to stretch a dollar. She was loving called Mema by her loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dorothy lived a wonderful 92 years and was loved by all, and she will be greatly missed.
She leaves behind her children, Charlotte (Dwayne) Cummings, Peggy (Donnie) Lay, Perry (Connie) Payne, Dana (Timmy) Adkins; her grandchildren, Tracy Lay, Shannon Cummings, Chad (Brenda) Cummings, Jeremy (Mandy) Lay, Cory (Kristy) Lay, Amanda (Chad) Wooden, Kyle (Jenna) Adkins, Bradley (Laura) Payne, Ashley (Ian) Walton, Cody (Desirae) Adkins; 22 great grandchildren; 2 great-great- grandchildren along with a host of dear family and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 58 years Hilles Clay Payne; a son, Greg Payne, grandson, Donnie Lay, her siblings LeRoy Emmitt, Jessie Emmitt and Bessie Clayton.
Funeral services will be at 12 noon on Monday, September 14, 2026, in the chapel of Schoppenhorst, Underwood and Brooks Funeral Home, 4895 N. Preston Hwy in Shepherdsville with burial to follow at Brookland Cemetery. Family and friends may pay their respects on Sunday from 3 pm till 8 pm and on Monday from 10 am till time of service at 12 noon.
