Originally born on April 4, 1942 in Wichita, Kansas, James attended Wichita North High School and later studied at the University of Wichita (now Wichita State University). His work at the campus radio station was among his first experiences that propelled a lifelong passion in radio journalism. This defined the trajectory for the rest of his life.
James was blessed to enjoy a successful career spanning many decades and locations including Arizona, Kansas, New Jersey, Ohio, Virginia, Oklahoma and Wisconsin before ultimately taking root in Louisville, Kentucky as News Director at WDJX radio station in 1989. His experience encompassed coverage of a diverse range of topics, as well as interviews and professional encounters with famous and ordinary people alike, including notable figures such as President Jimmy Carter and boxing legend Muhammad Ali.
Those who knew James were impacted by his incredible work ethic, integrity, humility and sense of humor. He was devoted to excellence and viewed life as a constant learning experience. His unique enthusiasm for local history, compelling news, the political landscape, and connecting with others on a personal level was evident. At the time of his passing, James was compiling a series of inspiring biographies highlighting the lives of people who had faced adversity, but were able to transform their turmoils in ways that positively contribute to their communities. The family hopes to publish this at a later date.
James’ love for radio was only surpassed by his love for family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Anh (Luong), with whom he had recently celebrated 42 years of marriage. Additionally, he leaves behind his children Michelle (Jonathan), Melanie (Scott) and Michael as well as grandchildren Caed, Anaiya, Zachary, Everly and Kellan. His youngest grandchild, Kellan, was born September 6, 2022, one day after James departed this world. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Wealtha (Sutherland), and his brother, Donald.
