John Richard Benz

Mr. John Richard Benz, age 77, of Louisville (Heritage Creek), returned to his Heavenly Father on Friday, May 14, 2021. Mr. Benz was born in New Albany, IN on August 20, 1943 to the late Ray Benz and Catherine Benz. He served in the United States Navy and was a Vietnam veteran, a Kentucky Colonel and he retired from LG&E after 31 years of service. He was a Boy Scouts of America leader for 39 years, a city council member for the city of Heritage Creek and a member of the Harrod’s Creek Masonic Lodge F&AM and the Scottish Rite. He was an avid hunter and fisherman his whole life.

Among those who preceded him in death are, his beloved wife, Donna Benz; his parents and canine companion, Nicky Joe.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his children, John R. Benz and Missy Benz; his brother, Scott Benz (Toni); niece, Kristan Cantrell (Zach); his canine companion, Bedford and cat, Moe Joe and a host of other dear family and friends.

Funeral service will be held at 12:00 pm on Thursday, May 20, 2021 in the chapel of Schoppenhorst, Underwood and Brooks Funeral Home (4895 N. Preston Hwy., Shepherdsville, KY) with burial to follow at 2:30 pm at El Bethel Cemetery (3824 IN-66, Milltown, IN) Friends may pay their respects on Wednesday from 1:00 pm until 8:00 pm and on Thursday from 10:00 am until the time of service at the funeral home.
