Martha Anne Underwood

Martha ANNE was the daughter of COLEMAN & Fannie Greenfield Sears of Greenville, KY. She grew up in Greenville and graduated from Greenville High School. Martha then moved to Louisville where she earned a Bachelor & master’s degree in education from University of Louisville. She then attended Spaulding University and obtained a Rank 1 in teaching as well as a Master of Library Science Degree.

Martha retired from Bullitt County Public Schools where she specialized in services for special needs students. Under her supervision the job placement for these students grew and became a pilot program for the state for special needs students. These students were placed with private businesses to gain work experience and training while still a student and was very successful. Nothing gave her more satisfaction than meeting a former student and learning how well they had done in life. She loved meeting and talking with them and was a source of encouragement for all.

Martha was a member of Hebron Presbyterian Church, Kappa Delta Pi, MENSA, Council for Exceptional Children, Okolona Woman's Club, and Friends of the Library.

Martha was preceded in death by her husband, Lonnie Unerwood; her husband of 44 years, Herb Riggs; her only sibling, Wilbur Sears. She is survived by her daughter, Melissa Anne Knight (Jeff); her son, Michael Sears Riggs (Loretta); 4 grandchildren-Aaron Riggs; Michael Kimbro; Peyton VanMeter, Maylee Anne Knight and 3 great-grandchildren- Lucy and James Kimbro, and Niko Knight Loredo.

A Funeral Service will be conducted on Saturday, October 25, 2025, at 12:00 pm in the chapel of Schoppenhorst Underwood and Brooks Funeral Home. Family and Friends may pay their respects on Saturday, October 25, 2025, from 10 am until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, Martha has requested that donations be made to Kosair Charities Crusade for Children and Hosparus.
