Michael L. “Mike” Newman, age 75, of Shepherdsville, Kentucky returned to his Heavenly Father on Sunday, October 25, 2026. He was born on October 11, 1951, in Kingsport, Tennessee to the late Edgar and Grace (Mullins) Newman. Mike was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force where he faithfully served in Nakhon Phanon in Thailand during the Vietnam War. Upon his return to the States, he met the love of his life, Jo Ann, and from that day forward, they were inseparable. Mike had a way of making people laugh, even if he didn’t mean to. He enjoyed fishing and NASCAR; especially Dale Earnhardt, Sr. His love for antique cars and hot rods found him building them from the ground up and custom painting them himself. Mike also enjoyed horses and was an avid deer hunter. He had a special, close bond with his grandson and son-in-law, spending time on deer hunting trips with them. After his retirement, he and his wife, Jo Ann, traveled and went on cruises and vacations out west. Mike’s true passion was his family, especially his grandchildren, whom he held dear to his heart. He loved attending Jacob’s golf and archery tournaments, and he was Haley’s “mock patient” from her age of 5. She kept him covered in band aids and he was her inspiration as she has now fulfilled her dream of becoming a Registered Nurse. Mike will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved him. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his best friend, Woody Horton of Shepherdsville.
Those left to honor and cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 50 years, Jo Ann (Akers) Newman; daughter, Misty Powell (John) of Shepherdsville; grandchildren, Haley Brianna Mills and Jacob Michael Powell of Shepherdsville; siblings, Larry Newman (Phyllis) of Pikeville and Carol Walker of Lexington; very special sister-in-law, Shirley Akers of Coxs Creek and his beloved cats, Gypsy and Smokey.
Funeral service will be conducted on Friday, October 30, 2026, at 10:00 am in the chapel of Schoppenhorst, Underwood & Brooks Funeral Home (Preston Hwy. at Brooks Rd.) with interment with full military honors in Brookland Cemetery. Family and friends may pay their respects on Thursday, October 29, 2026, from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm and on Friday, October 30, 2026, from 9:00 am until the time of service at the funeral home.
