January 8, 1934 - September 12, 2025
Amelia Marie Fraser of Perry, Georgia, went home to be with the Lord on September 12, 2025, after 91 years of a full life. Born on January 8, 1934 in Broadgate, St. Mary Parish, Jamaica, to Prince Fraser and Jane Robinson, Amelia spent much of her childhood between Kingston and Broadgate. She had a very close relationship with her father and stepmother, Nurse Fraser. Amelia gave birth to her only child, her daughter Yvette, in 1954.
Amelia lived her life serving others, especially those who were unable to do for themselves. A dressmaker by training, she took a seamstress skills test and, in 1969, was granted an opportunity to emigrate to the United States. After spending her first few years in New York caring for the elderly, she began working as a nurse’s aide for babies at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in 1974, a job she would hold until she retired in 2000. This work was an extension of who she was, caring for others, often when there was no one else available to do so. Parents knew that when they left their sick babies in the hospital, their children would not only get great medical care, they would also receive great personal care and attention from Amelia.
Family always came first for Amelia. A loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she was always strategizing ways to do more for her family. For most of her working years, she lived with her daughter and grandchildren, Tahare and Naema, in a multi-generational household. After spending over 35 years living in New York, Amelia spent most of her retirement years in Georgia. For much of those years, she expanded the multi-generational home, living with Yvette, Naema, and her great-grandchildren, Jeremiah, Preston, and Mason, who lovingly called her “Nana.”
Amelia is survived by her daughter, Yvette; her grandchildren, Tahare and Naema; her great-grandchildren, Jeremiah, Shoahannah, Preston, Haley, and Mason; her sister, Pearl; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Amelia loved to make those around her laugh, recalling stories from her childhood and her days working in the hospital. May we never forget her laugh, and may we never forget her love. Let’s carry that legacy forward, spreading joy, love, and laughter to all around us.
