Annamma Varghese Vanmelil, a loving and passionate woman of God, left this world in the early morning of September 19th, 2026. She went home to her Savior surrounded by her family at her son’s home in Lawrenceville, Georgia.
Born on August 11th, 1938, in Thiruvalla, India, Annamma was raised in an Orthodox family and was known for her gentle nature, loving heart, and care for others. Her family moved to Thrissur, India, in 1952 when she was 14 years old. Annamma married Varghese Vanmelil in 1954. On February 23rd, 1987, Annamma unexpectedly lost her husband to a stroke. Despite losing her husband at a young age while raising seven children, she took on both roles in the household and raised her children while also caring for their farm on her own.
In July of 1989, Annamma immigrated to the United States and joined her oldest daughter, Mercy Cherian, and her family in their home in Lilburn, Georgia. From 1989 to 1996, she spent time with her children both in India and the United States, frequently traveling back and forth between the two countries. In 1996, she began permanently residing in the Lilburn area.
Annamma accepted Jesus as her personal Savior and followed the Lord in water baptism in June of 1993. That same year, she began attending Atlanta Christian Assembly. Annamma was a constant prayer warrior, endlessly praying for her family and church family without ceasing. Characterized by her fire and passion for the Lord, Annamma made sure that every person she met knew what the Lord had done for her. She worked tirelessly to help raise all of her grandchildren in the United States and prayed faithfully for the lives they lead today.
Annamma spent her last years living in the home of her son, Geemon Varghese, where she faced many difficult health challenges, especially during her final year. Despite the pain and discomfort, Annamma rarely complained about her condition. Instead, she continued to smile and praise God, grateful for the life she had been given and for the loving family she had built around her.
She is survived by her son, Geemon Varghese; her daughters, Mercy Cherian, Leela Mathew, Laisa Jacob, Daisy Joseph, Jolly John, and Shancy George; her 13 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first born son Isaac, grandson, Joel Jacob, who passed away in December of 2021.
She was known as “Amma” by her children, and as her family grew, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren came to call her Amma as well. To generations of her family, Amma was a name that meant love, comfort, and home.
Amma will be deeply missed by all who knew her, but her memory and the impact she had on every life she touched will live on. May her soul rest peacefully in the arms of her Savior, where she longed to be.
