Born on March 16, 1936, in Adrian, Michigan to Wendell and Bonnie Lou Smith, Dave was a standout athlete at Adrian High School—earning varsity letters in swimming and tennis. He pursued higher education at the University of North Carolina, Siena Heights University, and ultimately received his degree from the University of Toledo. After college, he served honorably for two years in the U.S. Army.
On December 23, 1961, he married the love of his life, Gretchen Johnson of Williston, Ohio. This year, they celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary, a testament to their enduring bond. Together they raised two children—Scott and Sara (Clement)—in both Adrian, MI and Stone Mountain, GA.
Dave launched his entrepreneurial journey by founding a successful photocopying business in Adrian. In 1976, he relocated to Atlanta, GA where he became the Southeastern Representative for La‑Z‑Boy Incorporated and several other well-known office product companies. After retiring in 2001, Dave and Gretchen eventually relocated to Oldsmar, Florida, where they relished golf, cherished friendships, and quality time with loved ones. In 2024, they moved to Lawrenceville, Georgia to be closer to family.
A devoted sports enthusiast and lifelong golfer, Dave embraced his roles as husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather with deep dedication and care. He is preceded in death by his parents and his granddaughter (Morgan Clement). He is survived by his devoted wife Gretchen; children Scott (Kelly) and Sara (Kevin Clement); sister Valerie (Hall); aunt Mary Smith; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. His legacy also includes countless extended family members and dear friends who were touched by his generosity, humor, and zest for life.
Dave’s loving presence and joyful spirit will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.
