My most cherished memories of my cousin Gwen are of her being like a big sister to me. As I grew into my teenage years, we would go to parties and movies together, and spend time with friends. She was truly my sidekick. We often competed over who was the better cook, dancer, or dresser. We were inseparable. Both of us had a wonderful sense of humor — we would tell jokes, laugh at the silliest things, and even laugh at ourselves. We could communicate with just a look. As we grew older, life led us on different paths, but the bond remained.

Whenever we reunited, it felt as though no time had passed. We would reminisce, laugh, and share both happiness and sadness together.

Gwen, may you rest in peace. Your memory will live on, and you will be missed more than words can ever express.

Gwen and I were kindred  spirits; we had a very good relationship.  Gwen played many roles in my life; at times she was a big sister, advisor, confidant, cheerleader and mentor.  I would talk to her about my dreams and plans.

We lived together in Canada for a brief period. Later we lived in New York until she bought her home and moved on. Things were rough in the early days; that's the story of many immigrants. We pushed through; we work hard and persevered. We had each other's backs. She supported me wholeheartedly when I was in college. After a long day of work and school I would come home to a clean house and hot meals.

Gwen was a seeker, she was curious. She was always moving around in search of a better way, a better life. For Gwen, 'Where there is a will, there is a way'. As a young woman in Jamaica she would travel from one part of the Island to another.  She would sometimes find better job opportunities in the country. When she came to the States she was restless about reconnecting with her parents in England. The first chance she got she booked her flight. She was so happy about the reunion. In the early days, I traveled with her to England about three times. Each time I observed how happy she was to be with her mom (my aunt). In the busyness of life and other life issues we didn't get together as often as we should. I'm saddened by that.

Rest in eternal peace my sister, my friend.  You're someone I've always admired. You lived a  meaningful, productive, purposeful and God fearing life. You were not perfect, but which of us is perfect? I love you dearly. To God be the Glory; His Grace is immeasurable. I will forever carry your joyful Spirit  with me. ✝️

When we lose someone we love, we learn to trust that somehow they are in a better and brighter place. A place of peace, grace and joy without any pain. Gone to eternal rest.

I remember Rafie  as a favorite family member of my mom Inez, now deceased, whenever she was to visit us my mom would just light up with joy as she changed into hospitality mode to ensure that cuz got the best stay at our home everytime she visited us on Clarendon.
While  I was a child I could feel the love bond between those two daughters of the folks family from Guava Ground. I remember her taking baked goodies for us from my mom's favorite bakery in Kingston and, oh the long conversations they would have all hours of both day and night, talking just about everything that they could remember to catch up on. I could not wait for her to call me to come and put rollers in her relaxed hair. I must admit that I enjoyed the  nice smell of her hair spray and the feel of the relaxed hair passing through my fingers more than anything else. After minutes of just absorbing the sweet smell and playing in her hair she would just give up, take out the rollers that were out of place from every angle and let me start back all over again.....I think it is safe for me to say that I was the best hair dresser that she ever had in those days....I can now picture the many times that the comb and the roller fell out of her hair on the floor 😃....smile
I must say personally that she is a very kind hearted person all of her life and she always take care of the person's around her especially her children. When our mom passed during the time of covid she was one of the first people to reach out and support us. ....I could go on  and on....
I had one last happy moment with hwr when she came to the Cayman Islands on a cruise a few years ago.....I miss her and I know you all do but, I trust God at this time to comfort the family and help you all to bask in her fond memories as time passes........there is a place up there for people like Cuz! She will be alright

I was so saddened to hear about the passing of your mother Ms.Gwendolyn Folkes please accept my deepest sympathy and my condolences, I know how close you were with your mother I am incredibly sorry for your loss 🙏

Ms. Gwen was a joyful and peaceful soul whose laughter and kindness touched me immensely. She welcomed me into her homes (NY and GA), shared her life with me, and taught me lessons I will carry forever.

Ms. Gwen  taught me so many pearls without even realizing it.  She showed me how to live with joy, love family, pour into your children, retire early, and  remain faithful.  Ms. Gwen invited me to her church,  attended Sharon’s baptism and visited our church (Westchester Methodist Church, Bronx, NY) online, regularly.  I know she is rejoicing in the Lord, right now….

Ms. Gwen, I will always honor you  by cherishing Sharon, Joanne, and  your grandchildren as you would want.  You always kept me accountable…. 

Ms. Gwen’s presence was a blessing, and now  her physical absence leaves a deep emptiness. I will miss her dearly.

I will always cherish the memories I have of you. With each visit you did to the U.K. and my visit to Atlanta, I will forever hold those visits and memories shared dear. 

Although Aunty lived so far away from me, she always seemed close as she kept active in my life through calls, WhatsApp, Facebook messages and photo exchanges.  

Aunty Gwen lived life!  And like me, loved taking photos! Jetting off on holiday and looking good in every outfit! I will always remember the sound of her voice with the American accent mixed with the Jamaican patois 🤭and big smile filled with a little glimmer of Gold. 

Love you always Aunty. I am sad that you have left us in the physical but I have comfort knowing you are with the LORD JESUS with no more suffering or pain and you are at peace.
