John Henry Woodward, age 95 of Charleston, South Carolina, died on Sunday, September 18, 2022. He was born in Georgetown, SC on August 30, 1927 to the late John Henry Woodward and Lena King Woodward. He attended Winyah schools in Georgetown and Murray Vocational School in Charleston.
A veteran of WWII, he served in the U.S. Merchant Marines in the Army Transportation Corp on hospital ships. After WWII he was employed by various steamship lines in several engine department capacities.
John was employed by Waterman Steamship Corporation from 1946-1955 as a licensed marine engineer, after which he joined Factory Mutual Engineering Association as a nuclear inspector supervisor until retirement in 1993.
He was married to Bobbielu Lupo in Greenwood, SC by her father, J. Foster Lupo and her brother-in-law Rev. Carl J. Sanders, both Methodist Ministers. He was a member of Mountain Park United Methodist Church for more than fifty years, and a member of the Friendship Sunday School class. He was a Master Mason for more than sixty-five years.
He was pre-deceased by his son John Henry Woodward, Jr. and his daughter Susan Christine Woodward Hagin, both in 2012, by his beloved Bobbielu in 2015, by his sister Frances Woodward Hammond a week later, and by his brother William McGill Woodward, MD, in 2016. He is survived by his daughter Patricia Wood (Shane) of Canton, Tx, and his beloved niece Katherine “Kathy” Woodward Simons (Carlton) of Charleston. He leaves behind four grandchildren, Kayla Marie Woodward and Shane Michael Wood, Jr, both of Canton, Tx, John Michael Woodward of Phoenix, Az, and Daniel Anthony Hagin of Atlanta, Ga. He considered Kathy and Carlton’s children his grandchildren, Andrew Simons, Tillman Simons, Mary Simons and Grange Simons. There are four great-grandchildren of Phoenix, Az.
Funeral Services will be at Mountain Park United Methodist Church, 1405 Rockbridge Road, Stone Mountain, Georgia at 11:00 am on Monday, September 26, 2022. Interment will be in the Eternal Hills Memory Gardens in Snellville, Georgia following the church service.
In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made to the Mountain Park United Methodist Church operating budget.
