John David Wright was 57 years old when he first saw His Savior face to face. He went to be with Jesus on Wednesday, August 14, 2019 after living at Sovereign Hospice and Palliative Care in Lithonia, GA. His heart, which had suffered many attacks and was weakening daily, just finally gave out.
John was born on March 11, 1962 in Decatur, GA to George C. and Mary Wright, Jr. He was the second-born son in a family of four boys. Some say it was this “second-born” nature that made him such a competitive individual. His most beloved accomplishment was his graduation from Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts with highest honors. He loved his life as a chef, working in many local restaurants and food service establishments.
More than any other personal characteristic, John loved to interject his unique humor into the conversation. His most frequent punchline was often given at the expense of any fan of a team that opposed his beloved Alabama football team. He wasn’t the one who invented “dad jokes.” (For one thing, he was never a dad.) But, he perfected the art form and was fond of making people roll their eyes and groan!
John loved to do things for people. He especially enjoyed using his culinary skills to bake special desserts or create a unique entree for someone. If you even hinted at a particular taste, he could overwhelm you with gifts, just to make your happy.
You would miss the most important thing about John if you do not know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. As he could see his days were drawing to a close, he found comfort in singing songs of praise to God. His final messages to his family were challenges often found in recorded songs he sang acapella, from his bed. He would say not to sorrow as those who have no hope. He knew where he was going and he knew all those who love Jesus will see him again.
Family was particularly important to John as he precedes his mother, Mary, in death. He leaves behind his brother George and his wife, Debbie and their three children, Matthew and Lindsay, Zachary and Sheila, Nicole and Spencer, and 4 grandchildren, Adah, Nolan, Evelyn, and Kai; his brother Mark and his wife Kelly and their two children, Seth and Paige, and Chandler; his brother, Paul and his wife Kristin, and their children, Alex, Blake, Cole, Kingston, and Kaleah; his Aunt Judy and Uncle Clyde Goad; his Aunt Mickey; his Uncle Thomas Lawrence; and 5 cousins, Chrissy, Tommy, Patrick, Amy and Kim.
Visitation for family and friends will take place on Saturday, August 17, 2019 at Zion Hill Baptist Church at 3390 S. Puckett Road, Buford, GA at 3:00 PM. The funeral service will immediately follow at 4:00 PM.
