

Marjorie M. Baker was born on July 3, 1926 in Cleveland, OH to Norman L. McGhee and Marjorie Vashon McGhee. She had two brothers and one sister, Alice M. Bell and Ronald "Tiny" McGhee , both deceased, and Kanya Vashon McGhee of Atlanta. She grew up in Cleveland and graduated from Glenwood High School with honors in 1944. She received a BA in English, magna cum laude from Howard University in 1948. While at Howard, she met William A. Baker, who she married in December, 1949. From this union came two children, Karen Baker Douglas and William Keith Baker. The marriage later ended in divorce. Marjorie went on to earn a masters degree in English from Bryn Mawr College.
She taught fifth and sixth grade at PS 15 in Springfield Gardens, NY for over twenty-five years, until she retired in 1984. During her retirement she spent time traveling across the country with her good friend and fellow teacher, Ernestine Hadley. She also enjoyed spending time with her three granddaughters, Renee, Vanessa and Phylicia. Marjorie was very creative. She loved to crochet, do macrame and calligraphy. Her beautiful creations hung in her home as well as those of family and friends. Marjorie was also an avid reader, trivia expert, sports fan and gardener.
She will be cherished and missed by her son, daughter, brother, granddaughters and the newest member of the family, her great grandson Elijah, as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
