
Hartford - Elizabeth C. "Betty" Small was finally and mercifully released on October 4, 2007 from mental bondage she had suffered for more than a decade as a result of Alzheimer?s Disease. She died at Avery Heights in Hartford where she had made her home since 1993.
Born October 27, 1927 in Norwich she was the only child of Carl and Elsie (Jacobson) Small.
Miss Small grew up in Southington and was a graduate of Lewis High School there. She was a very proud alumna of Mount Holyoke College in S. Hadley, MA, class of 1949, where she was a Sarah Williston Scholar and received he baccalaureate degree with honors and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She also held graduate degrees from Brown and Wesleyan Universities.
Miss Small?s professional career was devoted to private secondary school teaching. She taught at the Greenwood School in Ruxton, MD and Ashley Hall in Charleston, SC and for 21 years was Teacher of English and Director of Dramatics at Northfield School for Girls in Northfield, MA (now the Northfield Mount Herman School) She retired in 1974 and returned home to Southington to care for her elderly mother.
Among other affiliations, Miss Small was a member of the First Baptist Church of Southington and the Hannah Woodruff Chapter, DAR.
She is survived by her second cousins, Lilly J. McComb of Newington, Carol J. Dennler of W. Hartford and Roland T. Johnson of Newington.
Great appreciation is due the aides, nurses and staff at Avery Heights for the wonderful care Miss Small received during her long illness. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, October 17, 2007 at 2 p.m. at the Julia Gilman Clark Chapel, Avery Heights, 705 New Britain Ave., Hartford. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be made to Mount Holyoke College, Development Office, South Hadley, MA 01075-1485 or Avery Heights, c/o Dr. Miriam Parker, 705 New Britain Ave., Hartford, CT 06106 or to a chaity of the donor?s choice. The DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington is assisting the family with the arrangements.
