

George was born in Clydebank, Glasgow, Scotland on July 20, 1920, son of the late John and Lizzie (Pursley) McCallum. He was raised in Scotland and served in the British Royal Navy during WWII. After serving he attended The Royal Technical College in Scotland where he learned the electrical trade. He came to the United States at the age of 30. It took him five years to become a US citizen and he was extremely proud to be an American. George worked as a union electrician for the IBEW Local 488. He recently received his 65 year membership pin.
He was an active member of Wolcott Congregational Church and enjoyed going to the Wolcott Senior Center. He was also a Free Mason, member of Wolcott Lodge #146.
He loved his family and was an avid soccer fan.
George is survived by his daughters Elizabeth and her husband Alec Taraskewich, and Jean Monroe all of Wolcott. He was known as “Poppy” to his grandchildren Shannon and her husband David Kenworthy of Aurora, CO, Scott Monroe of Terryville, Sara Monroe of Bristol, Amy Taraskewich of Wolcott and his great grandchildren Gina Griskus and Logan Murphy and several nieces and nephews. He considered Kathy Venditti of Wolcott as a third daughter and who was very instrumental in his care giving in the later years of his life. Besides his wife George was predeceased his son-in-law Geno Monroe, and by ten siblings including his brother Martin McCallum who also lived in Wolcott.
George’s family would like to thank the staff of VITAS Hospice, CCU at St. Mary’s Hospital, and Autumn Lake Health Care at Bucks Hill for the wonderful care he received.
Funeral Services will be on Friday September 29th at 10 AM at Wolcott Congregational Church 185 Center Street on the green in Wolcott. Burial will follow in Edgewood Cemetery. Calling hours are Thursday from 6 to 8 PM at the DellaVecchia FH 690 Woodtick Rd. in Wolcott. Memorial Contributions may be made to Wolcott Congregational Church.
