Helen was born on December 13, 1936, in Baileyville, Maine. She was the daughter of the late Clifton McCarty and Ethel (Gardner) McCarty. Her family lived in Woodland, Maine, Bath , Maine, and then moved to Southington, CT. Helen attended Southington High School, and graduated from Plainville High.
Helen met Cyr Albert Fournier, in Hartford, CT, while attending a friend’s wedding. They married on January 4, 1958, and were together for 61 years, before Cyr’s passing in 2020.
Helen and Cyr lived most of their married lives in Southington, CT, but for two years in the early 1960’s when they moved to Fort Kent, Maine. In 1962 they moved back to Southington. It wasn’t long after their return; their son (Craig) was born followed by their daughter (Sally). They purchased a home on Saw Mill Lane in 1964, where they resided until moving to an in-law apartment at Craig’s home in Coventry, Connecticut, in 2011.
One of Helen’s first jobs was at the Western Union Telegraph in Meriden, Connecticut. She beamed with pride when talking about her work experience and what she did at that job. After starting a family, Helen was a stay-at-home mom to her children. Helen took pride in being a homemaker, and the children in the neighborhood loved it, as they would come to the house often to see what Helen made from scratch for desserts.
Once her children were old enough, Helen started working part-time at Grants Department Store, and as an Avon lady, going house to house visiting her customers. She later worked for Lori Lock in Southington, in the Personnel Department, where she made several life-long friends. Helen retired from Lori in 1998.
It was at that time that Helen and Cyr were able to do some traveling, which included a six-week cross-country trip, including Hawaii; trips to Bermuda; Ireland; and a second trip back to Hawaii. They also enjoyed their vacations down south to visit her brothers; traveling to Canada to visit Cyr’s family; and trips to New Hampshire and the coast of Maine.
Helen loved spending time with her family and friends. She would lend a hand to anyone that needed it. She came from a very large family, with six siblings, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Helen was predeceased by her husband, Cyr Fournier, her brother Thomas McCarty, and sisters Christine McCarty Hoffman, Marian McCarty Hanning, and her Son-In-Law David Sykie. She is survived by her son, Craig Fournier (wife, Kathy), of Inverness, FL; her daughter, Sally Sykie Fortier (husband, Bruce) of Gilmanton, NH; her three grandchildren, Simmone Fournier (husband, Rob Turton), Craig Fournier, Jr. (partner, Jennifer Frey), and David Sykie, Jr. (wife, Rachel Glover); as well three great-grandchildren, Lily, Kane and Rosaleigh. In addition, she leaves behind three brothers; Melvin McCarty (wife, Joy), Earle McCarty (wife, Margaret), and Joseph McCarty (wife, Karen). Helen further leaves behind several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, cousins, and very special friends.
