Born May 20, 1940 in Queens, New York. Jim was the son of the late Michael and Florence (Lee) McNicholas.
Jim dedicated many years of his professional career to Coca- Cola, where he worked as a salesman until his retirement. He also proudly served his country as a member of the National Guard for six years.
A lifelong athlete, Jim enjoyed running daily before work, playing football, basketball, and softball, and remained active in sports his whole life. He was not only a competitor but also a coach, mentor, and passionate fan. A devoted supporter of the New York Yankees, he could recall statistics, dates, and memorable games with remarkable accuracy. His love of sports was a constant presence in the lives of his children, who spent time cheering him on at softball fields and basketball courts.
Jim's love of sports extended far beyond his own participation. He was always there to help his children & grandchildren practice, whether it was shooting baskets, throwing a ball, or offering encouragement from the sidelines. He generously volunteered his time coaching and one of his most meaningful contributions was founding and leading the Southington Girls Youth Basketball Travel Program. Through his vision and dedication, he helped create opportunities for young athletes to develop their skills, build confidence, and learn the value of teamwork. The program grew and positively impacted the girls and the community.
Following his retirement, Jim continued serving his community through his work at the YMCA, where he welcomed members at the front desk for many years. A dedicated runner, he was a familiar face among the many running groups that met at the Y that he ran with, and forming many friendships through his enthusiasm for fitness.
Above all, Jim's greatest accomplishment and deepest joy was his family. He was a devoted father and grandfather whose love, guidance, and support will be remembered.
Jim will be deeply missed by his loving family, including his daughter Meghan McNicholas-Leggett and her husband, Jamie, of Southington, his daughter Elizabeth McNicholas and Dave Hilb of Colorado, his son, Matt McNicholas of Groton. He also leaves behind six cherished grandchildren, Jamie Leggett Jr., Isabella Leggett, Nicholas Leggett, and Sophia Leggett all of Southington. Riley McNicholas and Maeve McNicholas both of Groton who brought him great joy. And his former wife Diane McNicholas Botsacos and husband in law Nick Botsacos. In addition to his parents, Jim was predeceased by his brother John, Uncle Jack “Unc” McNicholas.
Jim will be remembered for his dedication & love for his family, his strong work ethic, his love of sports & the Yankees, and the many friendships he made throughout his life.
