

He was born on Nov. 14, 1922 in Deep River, CT, the son of the late John and Mary Giza. He was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps (C.C.C.) as a teenager prior to enlisting in the Army. He was a veteran of WWII and was a member of Company L 254th Infantry Regiment and was a Pearl Harbor Survivor. He also served in France and Germany until the end of the war.
Mr. Giza had been employed as a Union bricklayer for IUBAC Local 1 for over 60 years. He was a member of the Southington American Legion Post #72 and was a lifetime member of the S-X Sportsman?s Club in Essex, CT.
Joe was an avid freshwater fisherman; his favored fishing hole was Bushy Hill Pond in Deep River. He had a great appreciation for nature and wildlife and enjoyed hiking and gardening. He also was an avid sports fan; his favorite teams were the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots, but most of all he loved spending time with his family.
In addition to his wife he is survived by his children, Mary-Ann Kjellquist and husband David of Southington, Michael Giza and wife Lynn of Colchester, and John Giza and wife Brenda of Orange, his grandchildren, Heather Giza, Collin Kjellquist and Cassie Giza, he also leaves a brother John Giza of Ipswich, MA and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters, Jenny Czlapinski and Rose Pike; brothers, Frank and Walter Giza.
His family would like to thank Fresenius Kidney Dialysis of Southington, most especially Steven Bogatz and Vitas Hospice of Middlebury.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St. Southington, with the Rev. Deborah Fontaine officiating, who is the niece of Joe Giza. Burial, with Military honors will follow at Immaculate Conception Cemetery. Calling hours will be on Wednesday from 6-8 p.m.
