Joseph Michael McCarthy, 89, of the Plantsville section of Southington, passed away on Friday, May 15, 2015 at home, surrounded by his loving family. He was married for 64 years to June (Hotchkiss) McCarthy.
Joe was born on Aug. 5, 1925 in Waterbury, the son of the late Robert and Mary (Gilhooley) McCarthy. Joe was a legend around the sandlots of Waterbury and was nicknamed Babe by the local newspapers. After high school, he signed a contract with the Washington Senators and played several seasons of professional baseball. In 1944, he was drafted into the US Army and served with distinction with the 69th Infantry Division seeing combat during the Battle of the Bulge and through the liberation of Europe.
Joe was a member of the VFW. Prior to his retirement he was employed as an eyelet toolmaker by TRW Dot Fastener for over 30 years. Joe loved to cook for his family, tend his garden and watch the NY Yankees and UCONN basketball games.
In addition to his wife he is survived by his loving children, Patricia Barrett of Middlebury, Robert McCarthy and his wife Elizabeth of Waterbury, Diane McCarthy-Shields and her husband Steven of Plantsville, Peg Altschuler and husband Donald of Wallingford, and his cherished grandchildren, Gary and wife Jill, Michelle, Michael and wife Jess, Meghan, Timothy, Sean, Margaret, Sarah and Daniel, and great-grandchildren Christian, Kaden and Brayden. He also leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews and friends.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Thursday, May 21, 2015 at 11 am at St. Aloysius Church, 254 Burritt St. Plantsville. Burial will be in Old St. Joseph Cemetery at a later date. There are no calling hours. DellaVecchia Funeral Home is assisting with the arrangements.
