Joyce was predeceased by her beloved husband of 65 years, William “Bill” Martino, who passed away in 2019. To all who knew them, they were inseparable—affectionately known simply as “Joyce & Bill.”
A proud daughter of Bristol, Joyce grew up surrounded by a vibrant community and large extended family. She met her lifelong best friend, Betty Carlson, in kindergarten, and the two remained close throughout their lives. After graduating from Bristol Central High School, Joyce began working at the Hartford Accident and Indemnity Company, commuting daily from Bristol first by streetcar and later by automobile. It was during this time that she met Bill. After marrying, they settled in Southington, where she would spend the rest of her life, most recently at The Orchards.
Joyce was a devoted mother who treasured family gatherings. She enjoyed playing cards, knitting, crocheting, and traveling throughout New England and to Cape Cod. In her later years, she cherished the many days and weeks spent with her grandchildren in Connecticut and Pennsylvania.
During her more than ten years at The Orchards, Joyce formed many meaningful friendships with residents and staff. She faithfully shared dinner each evening with the same group of friends and was an active member of the Sunshine Committee, welcoming new residents, spreading cheer, and helping to plan activities.
An avid reader throughout her life, Joyce especially enjoyed mysteries and novels connected to Connecticut, including works by authors such as Stewart O'Nan and Wally Lamb. She loved classic Hollywood films and instilled in her children a lifelong appreciation for books and movies. Joyce later re-entered the workforce as a sales clerk at Ormond’s Department Store in Meriden Square, where for twenty years she delighted in assisting customers and enjoying her favorite pastime—people-watching at the mall.
Joyce was a devoted parishioner of St. Thomas Church and faithfully attended Sunday Mass for as long as she was able.
She is survived by her children: Janice (David Longer), Gregory Martino (Brenda Fraser), and Gail (Michael Duffy); her grandchildren: Greer Longer (Michael Krueger), Ariel Martino, Jordy Martino, Alexander Duffy (Courtney), Kenneth Duffy (Kelsey), and Teagan Duffy (fiancée Amanda Brocki); and her great-grandchildren: Jack, Miles, Brooks, and Letty Duffy. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Andrew Martino and his wife, Susan, of Canton, Connecticut.
Joyce treasured special friendships with Jacklyn Duffy, Borgusia Popielarz, her niece Maureen Dornfried Cote and Donna Boga, whose companionship she deeply appreciated.
In addition to her husband, Joyce was predeceased by her brother, Brian L. Moran, and her sister, Ruth Dornfried.
