Julia "Jules" Avery Merrell, 77, of Fairhaven, Massachusetts, passed away on May 30, 2026, at Massachusetts General Hospital after a courageous health battle, surrounded by the love and comfort of her family.
Born in Southington, Connecticut, on May 25, 1949, Jules was the cherished daughter of the late Shepherd "Shep" Merrell and Ruth (Gilbert) Merrell. Raised in Southington, she grew up as part of a family whose roots in the community extended back to the 1700s, a heritage she carried with great pride throughout her life.
Jules was the beloved wife and best friend of Frank Cairns. They first met in 1971. Their paths took them to other places and then brought them back together, sharing a 40 year marriage filled with adventure, laughter, friendship, and unwavering devotion. Together they built a life rich with travel, creativity, and countless treasured memories.
Her parents were the owners of the Highland Golf Range on West Street in Southington, established by her father in 1948. Growing up immersed in the game, Jules became an accomplished golfer and passionate ambassador for the sport. She taught many aspiring golfers over the years and especially treasured playing alongside her dear sister, Ellie, in numerous invitational tournaments. The golf course was not only a place where she developed her skills, but also where she formed lifelong friendships and memories.
After attending local schools, Jules earned her Bachelor's Degree from Wheelock College. She went on to enjoy a distinguished career spanning more than thirty years as a graphic artist at Draper Laboratory in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She used her remarkable artistic talents to create presentations and materials that showcased the laboratory's engineering achievements. Her long career earned her membership in Draper's Quarter Century Club. Even after retirement, she remained connected to many former colleagues whom she valued deeply as friends.
While her professional accomplishments were impressive, it was her free spirit and artistic soul that truly defined her. Jules found joy in creating beautiful watercolor and oil paintings, transforming blank canvases into works of art that reflected her unique perspective and appreciation for beauty. She was equally passionate about gardening and took great pride in decorating her home, creating warm and elegant spaces that family and friends often described as museum-worthy.
A devoted member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Fairhaven, MA, Jules found great fulfillment in her faith community. She enjoyed gathering with fellow members, participating in church activities, and lending her voice to the church choir. Music was one of her lifelong passions. She appreciated all genres and even enjoyed spending time at the piano.
Travel was another great love in her life. Alongside Frank, she explored many places near and far, particularly cherishing their trips to Italy and the American Southwest. Whether discovering a new destination, tending her gardens, creating artwork, or enjoying a round of golf, Jules approached life with enthusiasm, curiosity, and gratitude.
Above all else, Jules was a people person. She possessed a rare gift for making everyone feel welcome, valued, and cared for. Her radiant personality could light up any room, and she never met a stranger that couldn’t become a friend. Even during her illness, she remained more concerned about others than herself, taking time to ask hospital staff about their families, offering words of encouragement, and sharing her warmth and kindness despite her own challenges.
She maintained countless friendships throughout her life, often reconnecting with loved ones through Facebook, phone calls, golf outings, and thoughtful messages. Her genuine interest in others and her compassionate heart left an indelible mark on everyone who was fortunate enough to know her.
She was a lover of all animals especially cats. Two of her cats Isis and Max lived for 22 years due to her care for them.
In addition to her beloved husband, Frank, Jules leaves behind her siblings Ellen and Nelson Merrell, dear friends, former colleagues and countless others whose lives were enriched by her friendship, generosity, and enduring kindness.
