Marie “Maura” Celine Hughes Crowley, proud Irish American and Democrat, died on August 23, 2015 after a long illness. Maura was born in Mitchelstown, Ireland in 1927 where she spent many happy years.
She adored her parents Emily Moran Hughes and Barnard Hughes, and she had equal affection for all of her younger brothers and sisters, Emily Murphy, Patrick (Padraig) Hughes, Bridget (Breda) O’Connell, Brian Hughes, and Philomena (Mena) Canning. She had great adventures in London and NY before landing in Danbury where she lived for 40 years. Maura spent countless hours volunteering at Aunt Nellie’s Attic, and active in the support of local politics, hers was a familiar face at the voting polls. Maura’s gift of gab was legendary and won’t soon be forgotten. She especially loved to reminisce about her youth and her favorite pastime as a girl was to go to dances in Mitchelstown with her siblings and friends – her dance card was always full. Considered a regular at the Danbury Library, she was a voracious reader and devoured thousands of books in her lifetime. She loved animals and the house was often filled with them. Feeding the “timid little creatures” in the backyard, or throwing bread to the ducks at Rogers Park gave her great happiness. She had a spirited love of John F. Kennedy, Elvis, fashion and old Hollywood. She was a tiny woman with a firecracker spirit and will be missed.
Maura was mother to three daughters and leaves behind Deirdre Williams and Rick Williams, Fiona Crowley and Mark Colegrove, Trish Brudz and Jay Brudz; her grandsons Michael Schacht, Jack Brudz, Kevin Brudz and Sam Brudz as well as dozens of nieces and nephews.
The Funeral will be held on August 28 at 9:45 am from the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington to Mary Our Queen church, 248 Savage St. Plantsville for a 10:30 am Mass. Calling hours will be on Thursday from 5-8 pm. A private burial will take place at St. Peter’s Cemetery, Danbury.
Note: Due to allergies, Lilies must be omitted from flower arrangements.
