He was born June 27, 1934 in Van Buren, ME son of the late Archie and Maria (Doucette) Poitras. He was retired from Peck Spring, a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a parishioner of St. Aloysius Church. He was an avid UCONN Girls basketball fan. His love of golf inspired his children and others to learn and enjoy the sport. His ability to speak in other languages enabled him to communicate with his granddaughter in her native language, Greek. Roland was a loving husband, father and grandfather
Besides his wife he is survived by his sons, Jeffrey Poitras and his wife Diane of Bristol, Greg Poitras and his wife Tammy of Peguabuck, Frank Tomcak and his wife Barbara of Bristol, a daughter, Rose Fox and her husband Michael of Southington, 2 brothers, Ray Poitras and his wife Kate and Gene Poitras and his wife Cathy all of Stuart, FL, 4 sisters, Rachel Violette of WalaWala, WA, Loraine Whalen of Hartford, Lorette Poitras of Manchester, Marcy LaChance and her husband Jim of Stuart, FL, his grandchildren, Ian, Ashley, Niclole, Paige and Michael Poitras, Marcy Deschine, Christina and Sophia Tomcak and John Fox, several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a son Mark L. Poitras, a sister Lillian Vallancourt and a brother Louis C. Poitras.
The Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009 at St. Aloysius Church, 254 Burritt St. Plantsville . Burial will be at St. Thomas Cemetery. Calling hours will be Friday 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. January 2, 2009 at the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St. Southington, CT 06489
