OBITUARY
Dr. Toby J. Kimm
November 29, 1957 – January 2, 2021
Dr. Toby J. Kimm, loving father of two and grandfather of two, aged 63, of Southington passed away on Saturday, January 2, 2021 at the HOCC at Bradley Memorial, Southington.
Born November 29, 1957 in Muscatine, IA, he was the son of the late James and Dorothy (Madsen) Kimm. Toby was a well-known veterinarian in Plainville at his practice Ragged Mountain Animal Hospital. He received his BS from University of Iowa over 20 years ago. While attending UI he excelled academically as well as playing for the Iowa Hawkeyes his freshman year. He then attended Iowa State where he received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Shortly after he moved to Connecticut where he eventually opened Ragged Mountain Animal Hospital.
Toby was dedicated to the individuals and animals who were in his life. He wore his heart on his sleeve and truly enjoyed being with and comforting others in their times of need. One of his truly great talents was the ability to make others feel special. He could light up a room with his humor and warmth. Words cannot express how fully and deeply he loved the people and pets he knew. While he may have passed away, he will remain in our hearts always.
He leaves his two daughters, Perry Kimm of Southington and Dr. Burgundy Johnson and her husband Erik of Coralville, IA; two grandsons, Archer and Leo; two sisters, Dr. Jill Kimm and wife Sharon Bellville of Ankeny, IA and Mary Kimm.
A celebration of Toby’s life will be held at a date and time to be announced. The DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington has been entrusted with the arrangements. For online condolences please visit, www.dellavecchiasouthington.com

Toby had been my vet since 1994, he always stepped up and beyond ($, I had none) to help my dogs and many other animals who took up residency in his clinic. I even took one of his feline friends home with me to ease his load. I drove up from Florida just to have him examine my dogs before I put him to rest and again in 2019 to get his honest opinion on another dog. I am so sad for your loss may his light shine on. See you in the next life Toby.

My deepest condolences to Perry, Burgundy, Ki Sook and the Ragged Mountain staff. Toby was a larger than life presence who will surely be missed. The love he had for his work can’t be taught in any school and I felt fortunate to have had him as a vet for my animals as well as a friend. 💔

We were shocked and saddened to hear of Toby's passing. Toby was a blessing to this earth with both humans and animals alike. We will miss his contagious laugh and thunderous voice. Toby's empathy and compassion was the same for people as it was for the many animals that were in his care. He was the only person that could handle and had earned respect from our Yoda. To Toby's family and extended family and staff at Ragged Mountain Animal Hospital, both past and present, please accept our sincerest condolences. To Perry and Burgundy, your dad is, and forever will be greatly missed. Thank you for sharing him with us.

Toby was a cherished friend and veterinarian. We have known him for the past 20 years and have always admired his intelligence, relaxed persona, warmth and caring.
I wish I could of told him more when he was alive This is all a shock because I just saw him about 2 weeks ago. But may his spirit live on in his daughters and the clinic he left behind.
My prayers are for peace and comfort to all the loved ones left behind.

Like so many, my wife and I met Dr. Kimm after we brought our first puppy home. We wanted to have her checked out by a vet. I didn't have a vet but my sister said she knew of a good one. She told me to trust her and we did. That was 20 years ago. Dr. Kimm has been a part of our lives since then. He has been with us for all the good and bad that comes with caring for a pet. He not only cared for our dogs but for us as well. That's a level of caring that can't be taught at any school. He was an amazing doctor, a compassionate man, and he will be sorely missed. Our thoughts are with his family and
we are sorry for your loss.

We would like to share our most loving heartfelt tribute to Toby .. as animal lovers, there was an unspoken and special bond we felt with him because he made his life's work helping animals. We will remember so fondly the Thanksgiving we shared with him, and the warmth he brought to our home. At your wedding, he brought us smiles and fun. And because of him, you .. Burgundy, are here and our lives are better as a result.
We are holding you in thought and sending deepest condolences in the loss of your dad, with lots of love and hugs..
Sincerely,

Toby's passing sent shockwaves through the community and to all who knew and loved him. My sincere condolences to his family.
I have worked with Toby for over 20 years. We all were like a family. We lost our best friend. He was truly loved and admired; He had a heart of gold. Toby was a brilliant, a charismatic, funny, kind, compassionate, sensitive soul, who was always ready to help "a friend" in need. He put others needs above his own.
Toby would light up the room with his presence, and made you feel special, thus he made many friends. You were assured that your pet was getting the best and most compassionate care by one of the brightest minds. The banter and the laughter were a bonus.
Toby, you are a legend. You have touched and saved so many lives. You left an indelible mark on us all. You are sorely missed, my friend.

Dr. Kimm, an extraordinary man and vet.
I first met Dr. Kimm in 1990 when I brought him my 6 wk old calico in for the first time. He fell in love with her and told me he would give me 1 million dollars for her! When she became sick and there was nothing else he could do, I cried and he cried. He sent me a sympathy card with a rose. I still have them both.
Toby was a genuine and honest man.
Thank you for caring for our fur babies and for us.

I send my deepest condolences to Perry, Burgundy and Dr. Kimm’s extended family, and to his wonderful work family at Ragged Mountain Animal Hospital.
As sad as I am that Toby is gone, I am filled with admiration for him. What a well-deserved fan club he has. Toby Kimm was an exceptional human being who used his time on the planet to do a vast amount of good.
I'm another of his devoted clients. In the nearly 30 years I've known him, he wasn't just my vet. He also became my friend. We met when I adopted two special needs cats from him that others wrote off as lost causes. But with his help (pro bono surgery and positive attitude) they lived long, full lives and brought us plenty of joy that comes from loving a pet. Toby was there at the end for each cat, helping me say goodbye to them at home.
Next, I brought Toby my new wild but beautiful husky lab mix rescue from the South, Lexi. Years later he expertly reconstructed Lexi's knee using a new TTA procedure, giving me and Lexi many more years and miles of hiking adventures together. As Lexi gets older, Toby's been guiding us with his powerful gift for the science and art of medicine. Recently when Lexi was going through a rough patch, Toby encouraged me to text him at home if Lexi needed it, even though he was fighting his own battle. That's the kind of person he was.
Toby made people feel special. We all know that booming laugh. He turned vet visits into pleasant, if not fun, social visits for us pet parents. We shared news on our children, talked about our work, politics, and more.
This fall I encouraged Toby to let his (human) patients help take care of him. Of course he declined. I didn't want to cross any lines, but I regret that I didn't do more to help him in his illness. Thank you Toby, Dr. Kimm, for that last prescription on New Year's Eve. Thank you for all the care you gave me and my beloved pets. You made the world a better place. Rest easy, friend, you did well. We'll miss you.

Thank you for everyone's kind messages. They have been extremely touching to read. I have been reading them every night before bed to feel better.
I just wanted to write a quick update. We would like to do a celebration of life ceremony when traveling is easier and the pandemic has lessened ( I am quite certain my dad would not want people to contract covid while celebrating his life) . I'm not sure if it will be the summer or another year but we will do it and we'll let you know in advance when we figure it out. I will likely also make small books to take home of what everyone wrote here along with pictures of my dad for the celebration when we do have it. Thank you again to everyone. Please feel free to reach out anytime.

Toby was such a kind and good soul to me. You could have me Keeling over in laughter one moment and gasping and astonishment at a generous touch that he would have in the next, I'm really blessed that I got to know him these last three years. I cannot emphasize enough that that man really touched me in the time I got to know him and it would always excite me when I knew it would be bumping into each other. Rest in peace my friend thank you for making a positive impact on this man's life

I’m so sad to hear of Toby’s passing. I have brought my pets to Ragged Mountain for over 20 years. I live in West Hartford and there were vets that were more convenient but not as great as Toby. He was wonderful, funny and exceptional. My first dog had a lot of health problems so I was a regular at ragged mountain for years. With my other 2 dogs, they were healthy so I saw Toby less frequently. It was always nice to catch up with him. I will miss him. He was truly a nice man. My heart-felt condolences to his family.

We feel privileged to have been able to participate in his once-a-month low-cost clinics during which many of our foster cats were spayed or neutered. Toby was truly one in a million, and anyone who knew him knows that's not hyperbole. He was one of the smartest, kindest, most charismatic people I knew, but more than that, I will always remember him for his eagerness and willingness to help others in their time of need. He was someone who could drop everything on a dime and drive 15 hours straight if he thought he could be of help, and in fact he did just that on more than one occasion to help my wife, his daughter Burgundy, for things as small (or as big) as helping to save her pet hamster. Nothing brought a smile to his face more than a good joke and knowing that he was doing some good in the lives of others. I will miss him terribly and I'm so grateful that I got to have him in my life.

Dr. Toby Kimm was one of the kindest, sweetest and most gentle human beings I have ever met. When my usually perky cat Kevin became quiet and depressed I brought him to see Toby Kimm. He kept him overnight to do some tests and sure enough the tests showed that my Kevin had a large tumor on his heart. I was absolutely devastated. But the thing about that day I remember most was that Dr. Toby Kimm cried when he gave me the news. Who does that?
He was truly one of a kind and the universe has lost a wonderful soul.
Rest in Peace, Dr. Kimm. Have a wonderful afterlife....

The animals have lost a great friend. The people have lost someone to look up to. You will be missed my friend. You have helped me in so many ways. I knew I had a good Vet when I got a single rose after putting down my first dog. He made that task much easier with dogs that came after. He knew I rescued all of them and liked me for that. Thank you for all your work with the Town of Plainville and Friends of Berlin Animals. As I am also a client of Friends of Berlin Animals.

Toby was a wonderful, kind, unique person. He was a special "friend" to our family during our pet's lifetime. From giving us his personal cell number, to giving up a Sunday evening at NO COST, he was the most generous of souls. He used his intelligence and humor to help others in a very special way. Sincere sympathy to his loved ones in their loss.

My condolences to his family. Dr Kimm will be remembered for his compassion towards animals especially homeless and feral. He was the only Vet in the area willing to work with us when we started a volunteer group in NB pound and aimed to have all pets fixed prior to adoption. He was willing to help animals of abuse and neglect at an affordable rate and also worked with owners to afford care unlike so many chain Vets out there now. This is a deep loss for the animal rescue world. Our earth was blessed to have someone here who helped so many. Sending love and light to his children and loved ones.

I am truly so sad to hear of Dr. Kimm’s passing. He was an amazing person and an exceptional veterinarian. Several years ago, two days before Christmas, my Beagle, Tabatha, ate an entire bag of candy kisses. I brought her in to see Dr. Kimm. He took an x-ray of her belly that showed a large ball of foil (from the candy kisses). He told me that he would have to keep her overnight. He was going to give her something to hopefully help pass the foil (and avoid surgery). The next day, Christmas Eve, I went back to the clinic to check on Tabatha. Dr. Kimm was hesitant to let me take her home, as she did not make as much progress as he had hoped. When he saw the look on my face when he said that he thought she should stay until after Christmas, he said “Look, I’ll tell you what. Take my personal cell number. You can take her home. Call me anytime, day or night, even on Christmas, if you need me.” I was able to take my dog home and feel a real sense of security having Dr. Kimm’s phone number with his insistence to use it if I needed to. Luckily, I didn’t have to disturb Dr. Kimm’s holiday. I took Tabatha back the day after Christmas and Dr. Kimm gave her a clean bill of health. I will never forget his kindness and compassion, not just on that one occasion, but every time I took any of my pets to see him. He was one in a million. My sincerest condolences to Dr. Kimm’s family and to everyone at Ragged Mountain Animal Hospital.

Our dog Maggie a giant schnauzer loved him I never had a dog in my life that enjoyed going to the vet so much to see him. You’re such a gentle soul and on Tuesdays we happened upon seeing him cry after putting down a long time friend dog down and it was so touching. Only knew one other vet that cried with the family when they put the animals down. I hope the family is comforted in knowing that he really was a cherished loved individual not just buy pets but the pet owners as well. We lost Maggie eight years ago, I hope being one of his favorite patients she greeted him. So sorry he will be missed!

My sincerest sympathy to Perry, Burgundy and the entire Kimm family! When I met Toby in 1992, I had a very sick boxer puppy! Toby properly diagnosed him and prescribed the medication to help my puppy live a wonderful life! Toby and I became ‘family’! I called him ‘my brother from another mother’. Toby provided the best possible care to all my boxers! For times of crisis, Toby gave me his cell phone number! I will miss his jovial personality, humor and veterinary expertise! I will miss our periodic texts, mostly me checking up on his health. I am deeply saddened by his loss but I know he is no longer suffering! I hope you find comfort in knowing how much he loved his daughters, grandchildren and family!
Rest In Peace Toby! I hope you are playing with all the fur babies you loved that have crossed over the rainbow bridge, especially Tyson, Brock and Coach! 💔

I knew Dr Kimms name from my sister Sue -mother of Lance. He took great care of Lance and I know my sister and brother in law as well as many others are devastated. Her words of his care for Lance were always so uplifting because he went the extra mile.
He also spayed my cat Bear through the FOBAC project and kindly repaired her hernia at the same time. I never met him personally but trusted in him because of my sister and all the wonderful stories.
My condolences to all that were a part of his life

How do we begin to put into words, the depth of emotions, in our heart, and soul, upon hearing that our friend, left this world? He was the best of the best, and an absolute hero to so many.
We met Toby almost 19 years ago, when we brought our beloved Max, our Miniature Schnauzer, to him. Max was 3 months old, and Toby fell in love with him at first sight, it was mutual for Max. Anyhow, that was the beginning of a great friendship. He took care of Max 15 years of his life. And when Max was in Kidney failure, he gave us options, and reassured us that we didn't do anything wrong. That in fact, it was because of our love and caring that Max made it so many years. Max died in our arms at home. I remember calling Toby to tell him. And he cried with us, and said, " I'm glad he passed naturally in your home, Max did it his way." We got another little guy, now Mickey. When Toby met him he said, "Hello Mickey, you have big paws to fill. Max was super special. But I can see you will be too."
Ron and Toby went to see baseball games together, and enjoyed making the "Summertime rounds" in Ron's old neighborhood, while grabbing their favorite pizza .
Toby was a caring, kind gentle bear, who gave of himself freely, and went the extra mile to help others. He was brilliant, forthright, honest, funny, witty, and prolific in his skills as a Vet, and a beautiful human being overall. We were truly blessed to have known him, and we will miss him everyday of our lives.
Burgundy & Perry, you were so fortunate to have had him for your Dad. He loved you both so very much. He spoke of you often, his grandchildren, and sisters. We are so sorry for your significant loss, but he lives on in all of you.
We've no doubt he's in heaven tending to all of the animals he knew and loved throughout the years. I know Max ran to greet him, welcoming his favorite Vet.
Farewell Toby, until we meet again. Thank you for your friendship, and caring so much...

Dr. Kimm took care of our dog Dodger (and us!) for 12 years. He guided us through many emergency surgeries and late night x-rays, always with good humor, positivity, and compassion. We will never forget his voice, his smile, his stories, and absolutely everything he ever did for us. His love for his patients was evident in everything he did. We are so saddened by his passing and extend our deepest sympathies to his family. We remember how proud he was when he came back from meeting his first grandson - told us he drove all night because he was so excited to meet him! The world has lost a truly great person, one we were honored to have known. Thank you, Dr. Kimm, for your care, comfort, skill and genius. You are amazing. Rest in peace.

I’m deeply saddened to hear about Toby’s passing . My condolences to his daughters: Burgundy & Perry and his sisters . I worked with Toby as a veterinary technician a little over twenty years ago. Starting off at his first practice in New Britain , and helping him move into the RMAH people know today. We worked many long hours together and I House sat for his family . Toby’s smile , humor and enthusiasm for his work was contagious . To this day I think back about the decade I worked with him at RMAH. I’ve learned so much from him while there about compassion , veterinary medicine and life . I’ve not met another vet that indiscriminately gave to the animals as much as he had. Wether it was the swan he came back from the beach with, the hit by car stray dog he did orthopedic surgery on or one of Burgundy’s little white mice he removed a tumor from . He will be surely missed . The wonderful thing is - I know his talent and compassion for animals has rubbed off on many making the world a better place! I bet along with many others his Beloved white Shepard Dakota was there to greet him in heaven .

We are unbelievably sad to hear of the passing of Dr Toby Kimm. He was our vet for more than 20 years and his death leaves a hole in so many people’s lives. His booming laugh, charisma, and huge caring heart were one of a kind. His surgical and diagnostic skills were extraordinary. He always made us feel as if we were making the best decisions possible for our beloved pets, and he was always so kind to both people and animals. Toby was so so proud of his daughters and our sympathies go to them as well as his Ragged Mountain family. A life cut far too short, but a life well lived !!!

Perry and Burgundy my deepest sympathy to you for the loss of your Dad. Always know his life revolved around your happiness and success. He always bragged about his girls.
Dr. Kimm was like a father to me, I began working for him as a kid, he took me under his wing and helped to make me the person I am today. Over the next 10 years, we became family, we took care of each other, as he did for all of his RMAH staff (family). He instilled confidence in my abilities that I didn’t know I had, he pushed me into situations I never thought I could handle, but he knew I could. My fondest memory of him was when we had just worked a 12 hr shift and an emergency called and then another emergency came in, we worked until 2 or 3 am to save three different patients’ lives, he never once complained, instead he was singing, smiling, and making us laugh. His compassion for his patients was insurmountable and highly contagious. He always made you feel as if you were better than you believed, and he made sure you knew it. His gigantic heart, big booming laugh, his miraculous diagnoses, legendary saves, and of course his crude humor during surgeries will be missed the most, that void in our hearts will never fill, but the entire RMAH family knows that he lives within all of us.
“Life will still be goo”
Love you Always Doc

Toby was one of a kind and will be greatly missed by so many, people and animals. He was such a dedicated, caring, outstanding vet. He was a genius. He was also a great friend and always went above and beyond in everything he did. I will miss his booming voice and laugh. There are so many stories I could share about Toby, but he and I always got a good laugh about one of the first visits I had with him, just about 25 years ago, with my dal Lucky. He was giving her vaccinations and she bit me with her needle puppy teeth and I was yelling she's biting me! He got my fingers loose, picked up Lucky from the exam table, held her close and pet her saying, oh it's ok, you didn't mean to hurt Mommy, you're ok - as my fingers were bleeding all over the place. That is just one story, of so many, that his love and care for animals knew no bounds.
My deepest condolences and prayers to his family. He will be truly missed. God bless you my friend.

I will always remember Toby fondly, as a fun lovable neighbor and a great Dr. Even though I had not seen him in many years, he always remained in my thoughts. Since moving away from CT, my family always missed the great care Toby provided to our pets.
Rest in peace Toby.

I am so saddened to hear about Dr. Kimm's passing. He was one of a kind with a heart of gold. He was loved by so many and will be missed beyond words. Dr. Kimm went over and above to care for so many animals and his compassion to their owners was immeasurable. He took such great care of my cat Tigger who wasn't the easiest to deal with when going to the vet. When it came time to put him down Dr. Kimm came to my house so that my last memory of him would be peaceful. There will never be anyone like him. He was an angel on earth now an angel in heaven. I will miss you so much.
Our deepest condolences go out to his family.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Toby's passing... He always seemed larger then life to me...He was best vet ever and good friend..He cared for all of my fur babies for forty years...He truly cared for all animals and the people that love them....On the day of my Moms funeral my Dane Reagan took a bad turn...He dropped everything and was there in 15 mins to help our big guy cross the rainbow bridge, but that was who he was. Three weeks before we moved to Fl. he saved my Quinn and he is now a healthy 81/2 year old Dane..I always stopped by to see him when ever I was in Ct...He will be truly missed by all that had the honor to know him...My condolences to his family..

I am beyond sad to hear this news! Toby was a great vet, but so much more. He was a good, kind, funny, easy going, gentle soul. He was more than my vet (forever), he was a friend. When I heard that he was ill, I reached out to him. I wanted him to know I was here if he needed anything or if there was anything at all I could do. Of course he said he didn't need anything, but I would have loved if he took me up on it, just so I could see or speak to him one more time! He even came in and did my dog's surgery in December! I am so sorry for his family and loved ones. Truly a devastating loss for all who knew him. He will be missed by so many. May he be at peace and rest and smiling and laughing up above!

Dr. Kimm has taken great care of many of my families pets. He was dedicated to making sure all pets were taken care of and even helped families that could not pay the full price because he was all about the pets and their health. I have a cat, his name is Kevin...he is an inbreed that has many problems the most important is his asthma. He was very proud of me because I would give my cat nebulizer treatments every 4hrs. He always said to me that not many people would do that for an animal. My family and our pets have lost a wonderful, caring Vet who will be sadly missed. Condolences to his Family and his Family at Ragged Mountain.

It is not without difficulty writing my memories of Toby. He was definitely a larger than life character, whose absence feels unimaginable. Coming into work was made enjoyable due to his raucous laughter, boisterous personality, and yes, the malapropos commentary. He affected my life in numerous ways: the hands-on education in the medical treatment of animals; helping me with my own misfit pets; allowing me to befriend his daughter Perry (never complaining about our shopping bills); and my before undiscovered love of gambling and Atlantic City.
To say Toby will be missed is an understatement- he was a part of my life for so long. It saddens me greatly he's no longer here, but I'm thankful for having known him.

I can’t stop thinking about Dr Kimm all day today. I want to express my deepest sympathy to his family for their tremendous loss. The stories shared by friends, family and clients show the true dedication and compassion he had to both the animals he treated and his clients. I feel fortunate to have known him all these years and to have had the privilege of his years of experience and amazing knowledge of medicine. I will forever be thakful for the generosity and kindness he showed both me and my pets. I will miss his laughter and big smile that always greeted me when the door to the examination room opened, and his patience and kind words during some of the most difficult times I’ve gone through with my pets. May his family find comfort in all the wonderful stories being shared about his amazing life.
Rest In Peace....

I spoke to Toby the week of Christmas. He offered to treat my mom’s dog who was visiting for the holiday. He said he would see her after his doctor’s appointment. When he called me to discuss Lola’s visit, I asked how he was doing. That’s when he told me in typical Toby fashion about his diagnosis, treatment and upcoming surgery. I had no idea what he had been going through. He told me that his biggest concern was keeping himself from going crazy when he would have to be in the hospital for ten days after the procedure. He and I always talked proudly about our grown children.
He was so proud of Burgundy & Perry. He hated the fact that he had not been able to visit his new grandchild. I text him Christmas Day to wish him a Merry Christmas and tell him he would be in my prayers. He texted back and thanked me. My heart is broken💔 Toby was a kind, compassionate & generous soul who was a brilliant vet. He was my friend and I trusted him. There will never be another Toby Kimm on this earth, but Heaven just gained an angel. Lila & I miss you already Toby. Sending love & peace to your girls, grandchildren, family and your wonderful staff at Ragged Mt.. Hope we meet again!

Dear Perry and family,
Words cannot describe the sadness our family feels hearing about the passing of your dad. Toby had such a gentle soul and was such a compassionate and brilliant veterinarian. What I admired most about him was how proud he was of his daughters, Perry and Burgundy. When talking about his kids he lit up and when it came to fighting for his life after his horrible diagnosis he said to me, “ I have to fight this to the end for my children!” Dad would want you to stay strong for him and hold those special memories in your hearts forever. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. 💔😔

My heart is broken hearing of Dr Kimm's passing. I first met him right out of Vet school some 43 yrs ago. He always took PHENOMENAL care of not just our pets but us through the years. Always available to listen, address concerns, give his no nonsense advice, not candy coat anything and treating each of us (2 and 4 legged) as though we were his one and only patient/client. Sharing that wonderful sense of humor and his laugh along with his Big Heart all of which will be missed. His passing has left an UNBELIEVABLE void in so many lives. He was so much more than a Vet and we (as others) had the privilege of calling him friend. Rest in Peace. Thoughts and Prayers to the family.

Both Caleb & I send our sincere condolences and heartfelt prayers. Dr. Kimm was more than Lances' vet, he was our friend. A super huge hearted, compassionate guy who went WAY above & beyond. When it was time for Lance's appointment, we'd say, "Lance, do you want to go see Dr. Kimm?".....his tail would start going, he'd get so excited!! and Lance knew the drill by heart when we'd arrive!!!! When he was as called, he'd walk right down the hall into the room, right up onto the scale and would literally sit there and wait for Dr. Kimm. He will always hold a very, very special place in our hearts....he will be missed by so many.

Our hearts are so broken, and tears have not stopped, since hearing the passing of Dr. Toby Kimm...... Not enough words to express our sorrow... Dr. Kimm was a kind, caring, loving, dedicated, genuine soul, who was put on this Godly Earth, to do what he did, take care of animals...We have been going to him for many, many years with our cats....Our cats would always be so anxious going to the Vet, but as soon as Dr. Kimm walked into the room, they calmed right down...Animals know a kind, loving person, and that was Dr. Kimm.....He was so easy to talk to, joke around with, and his heart was full of love....No words for how much, he will be missed, but he will always be in our hearts.

Toby was our veterinarian for over 30 years and he always had a smile, a funny story to share and gentle honesty. There were many times we would have an animal crisis during off hours and he always replied to my text messages to meet him at the clinic. He never charged us and that sometimes included treatments and xrays. That was just Toby. Kind, hysterically funny, brilliant and someone you couldn't help but to love. His personality was bigger than life and now that he's gone, our hearts have a tremendous void. He wasn't just our vet but part of our family and dear friend. We're going to miss you, Tobe. You were the best. You are a rock star.

20 years ago I was told by a friend that there was an opening for kennel help at RMAH. I went in, met with Dr. Kimm and started the next day. He taught me so much about animals, things I never even thought I would ever learn. He was truly an amazing teacher and friend. I was lucky enough to be able to work at RMAH, once again starting 8 years ago. When I walked in that door it was like I never left. Toby was just an all around great guy with so many jokes, even if you tried to be in a bad mood you would leave laughing and smiling. We still bring our animals there and even though I don’t work there anymore, Dr. Kimm would always call me family. Me and my family are truly going to miss him! Rest In Peace Dr. Kimm ❤️

I am soooo incredibly sorry for your loss. This is a huge loss for the community and especially for you the family. I can tell you after Toby being my vet for my pets for over 30 years that he is the most caring compassionate gentle kind person I will ever meet. On Sunday nite, our friend called us to ask who was our vet, and I told him that Toby Kimm at Ragged Mountain was and then I went on and on how great Toby was. He called us back and told us that Toby had just died. It was so painful to hear that.I am so sad that the world and “all of Gods creatures” have lost such a gentle, gentle man who radiated goodness with his smile, and who had the most calming voice. I will never forget him opening the door with that beautiful smile of his and a sparkle in his eyes. He is the only vet I have known, and we have all been blessed by his presence in our lives, and the lives of all of our pets. Toby, you will really be missed.

Toby was our veterinarian for many, many years. He was the most compassionate person we knew. He never turned an animal away that was in need. We boarded our kitty Max and He would let him hang out with him and the staff during the day. He jokingly told us that he would adopt Max in a minute if we needed to re-home him. Toby was one of a kind and will be greatly missed.

Burgundy and Perry,
Your dad was an amazing man. My family has been going to him since we met him at the emergency vet in West Hartford, and when he opened his practice on West Main St we were one of his first patients with our cat Samantha. When I got married and started adopting my own fur babies I refused to even consider another vet. Dr Kimm was more than our vet, he had become a dear friend. The compassion he showed to each of my babies was beyond measure. One of my favorite memories was my birthday that I received my Haley dog as a present. We went out to dinner for my birthday and Toby and the staff were also at the restaurant after doing a marathon spay/neuter clinic trying to relax, but he STILL took the time to shoot the breeze with my family and I. When we were leaving I mentioned I would see him the following week once we picked Haley up for a check over. Well, the adoption paperwork took longer than expected so it was a few weeks later that I got to the office and he always greeted Haley as Haley the birthday present! He will be so so missed. Again, my deepest condolences to you both

There are some people that you meet in your lifetime that leaves a special place in your heart and that was Dr Kimm. He was the most sympathetic vet that I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. When my dog for 13 years was sick and went to doggie heaven he was so sympathetic and caring and made me feel so at ease. I have never met someone who was so compassionate in the work That he did with his animals patients. My condolences go out to his family. He will be sadly missed.

My brother Toby was extraordinarily kind and generous even when he was little. He always loved and protected animals. When he was 6 he started a newspaper, The US Muffy Club, to write about the neighborhood animals including our cat Muffy.
I’m proud his lifelong work for animals, and I’m proud of his brilliance and deliberate, hard work at Ragged Mountain Animal Clinic.
I am mostly proud of his two daughters Burgundy and Perry and his two little grandsons.
I share sorrow with Toby’s daughters and Burgundy’s family, friend Kisook, my wife Sharon, our sister Mary, our nephew Tony, our niece Rebekah, so many dear friends, coworkers, and clients, Roxanne his dog, and all the cats. Hail and farewell, Brother.

My heart is broken. Dr. Kimm has taken care of our babies for well over 30 years. He had a heart of gold and truly cared for the welfare of the animals. I always knew that he would tell it like it was and never recommend euthanasia unless there was no other option. I trusted him with our babies. Knowing my daughter wanted to become a vet tech, he always took the time to include her while working with our animals. I will never forget his humor, compassion and generosity, our whole family sends their sincerest sympathies to his entire family. God Bless.

Words cannot express the sadness we felt when we heard the news of Toby's passing. We met Toby in the late 90s when we began using him as our vet. He was a vet like no other. He wasn't in it for the money - he truly cared for each of his patients. I remember calling him on a Friday evening, (yes, he gave us his personal cell!) because our dogs had gotten into with each other. He left the dinner he was at and came to our home to treat them!
A very vivid memory I have (10/17/01), our great dane, Storm, had surgery. All went well. As you can imagine, he didn't fit in a crate so they put him in an exam room with blankets while he was recovering. Unfortunately, while trying to stand up, Storm encountered a blood clot that immediately went to his brain and killed him. We received "the call". We rushed back to Ragged Mtn. where they brought us into the room where Storm was. Shortly after we were brought in, Toby came in the room. He said nothing, just sat on the floor with us - and cried. He was devastated. While this was in no way his wrong doing, he refused to bill us for the surgery. It was never about the money, rather always about the wellbeing of the animal.
I'm certain that every one of his patients that crossed the rainbow bridge was there to greet him with wagging tales, sandy tongues, and glimmering eyes. He was truly one of the best.
May you rest in peace Toby...

Toby has been my friend and veterinarian for 30-something years. Toby treats every pet like they are their own, but he had an extra soft spot for my cat Linus, whose life Toby saved for the first time at 7 weeks old--and countless other times for the next 18+ years. As others have mentioned, Toby made everyone feel special. In fact, I was so special that Toby always tried to give me a break on Linus's bills. Well, after I lost Linus, I lost my discount. All that time, the discount was for Linus--not for me. Haha. And when we had to say good-bye to Linus, Toby let me hold him for as long as I wanted, and Toby cried right alongside me.
Toby, I miss you already. You were the kindest, warmest, and most generous person I have ever known, and I will carry that big laugh of yours in my heart forever. Burgundy and Perry, and the whole team at Ragged Mountain, please do not hesitate to reach out if there is anything at all you need.

I met Toby through his sister, Dr Jill Kimm. He was a guy that was so full of life with a great smile and a hearty laugh. I know how much he loved his daughters Burgundy and Perry. I believe he was a great dad. I'm sure his passing was a tremendous loss to everyone who knew him. To Jill, Burgundy and Perry I am so very sorry for the loss of your brother and Dad. I'll never forget the time I met him and Perry for pizza in Des Moines. They came in with this fat little poodle-like dog, Roxanne, who to my amazement jumped up into the booth when Toby told her to. All I could do was laugh. Fly high Toby you are in a better place.

My husband and I have been going to Toby ever since he was on west main street in new britsin. We have adopted many animals from him and he has always taken care of all our pets with such professionalism and genuine love. During surgeries for our pets we were allowed to go see them even if the office was closed, we would just call and meet up with a tech and go visit our babies and stay with them for awhile. Dr kimm was truly an animal lover and so nice and loving and trusting. No one will be able to take his place. We trusted every decision he made and respected him for always telling us the truth as to what he thought. He will be missed dearly. Rest in peace dr kimm.
