Valentino A. Coccagna

Valentino A. Coccagna, 90 of Southington passed away on Wednesday, February 10, 2021 at the HOCC at New Britain General.

Born May 10, 1930 in Waynes, PA, he was the son of the late Bartolomeo and Mary (Luponio) Coccagna. His family moved to Southington when he was six years old.

Val joined the Army at the age of 18. He worked at the Pentagon for a year and a half before he was sent overseas to Japan and then to Korea. He saw action at the Battle of Inchon in 1950. He was injured and sent to Tokyo for three months and stayed until his four year tour of duty was over. He then returned to his hometown of Southington.

Val was a tool & die maker for New Departure Hyatt until his retirement. During the construction of St. Aloysius Church, he was a contributor to the building fund. He was a member of the American Legion Post 72 as well as a member of the Bristol Elks Club for over 50 years. Val was a Supernumerary officer for the Southington Police Dept. from 1955-1965.

He enjoyed traveling, playing cards and was very active with the Southington calendar House and was a volunteer at Bread for Life for many years.

He is survived by his four children, Anthony Coccagna and wife Florence of NC, Nancy Coccagna of Hartford, Carol Ladd of Southington and Lillian Newell and husband Richard of Windsor; his loving former wife, Mary Coccagna; two sisters, Rita Ingriselli and husband Al of Southington and Carmela Bazzano of Meriden; three grandchildren, Tyler Paparello and wife Amber, Marcia Nieves and Christina Angeli; five great grandchildren, Vincent, Isabella, Gian, Mia and Stella and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother Abramo Coccagna and a grandson Timothy Ladd.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Wednesday, February 17th at 10:30 a.m. at St. Aloysius Church, 254 Burritt St. Plantsville. Burial with military honors will follow at St. Thomas Cemetery. My sympathy to you all. You girls were so good to your Dad. Thank you for bringing him to our Tuesday Poker Club he so looked forward to it every week. We had some good times. And he always told us he was so thankful that you brought him to poker. So glad you included us in his 90th. Birthday drive by. It was a tough year this dam Covid. May he rest in peace. Our sympathy we will miss him, but when we do play poker we will have fond memories to share
