

Born July 26, 1954 in Southington, he was the son of Ruth (Monk) Smith of Plantsville and the late Kent Smith. Bill attended Southington schools and graduated from Southington High School in 1972. He moved to Maine in 1974 and made his home in Princeton. Prior to retiring he worked for the Princeton Police Force and the Woodland Paper Mill. He was a former Selectman for Princeton, ME and was instrumental for bringing federal funds to the Princeton Airport for upkeep and development.
Bill enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending quality time with his family and friends. He always held out a helping hand to anyone in need and lived life to the fullest.
Besides his mother, he leaves two daughters, Carla Griffin and husband Shawn of Southington and Michelle Washington and husband Andrew of Plainville; two sons, William R. Smith Jr. of Bangor, ME and Brandon Smith of Princeton, ME; step-daughter, Amy McArthur and husband Brian of Dayville; a brother Kent Smith Jr. and wife Lynne of Southington; a sister Kathleen Porretti and husband Lou of Plantsville; five grandchildren, Matthew and Mark Griffin, Emily, Evan and Elizabeth McArthur and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Bertha Caldwell and Karen Szpak.
The funeral will be held on Saturday, Sept. 4, 2010 at 9 a.m. at the Plantsville Congregational Church, 99 Church St., Plantsville. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. Calling hours will be Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington. There will be a Memorial Service, in Princeton, ME, at a later date.
