Young was born on July 17, 1931 in Newark, New Jersey, to his late parents Shee Chuck and Alice (Hugh) Eng. After graduating from Long Branch High School, Young attended Rutgers University where he was an active ROTC member and Treasurer of the Phi Sigma Delta fraternity. He graduated with the class of 1953, majoring in Bacteriology. Young was a veteran of the Korean War, ranked as Private serving in the U.S. Army as a medic. Later, he spent most of his life living in Long Branch, New Jersey, where he served as president of the Long Branch chapter of the AARP for four years before moving to Connecticut in 2006.
During his younger years, Young would help his parents around the family’s restaurant in Newark, New Jersey. Throughout his life, he worked at various Pharmaceutical Laboratories in the New Jersey area as a Quality Control Analyst and he developed a wide range of interests and hobbies. Young loved the arts, especially photography where he even had his photographs on display in galleries in New York and New Jersey. He also enjoyed big band jazz, musicals and operas.
Young was a genuine man with a knack for history and a breadth of knowledge. He enjoyed traveling to Vermont often where he would ski and spend time with a group of long-time friends. Continuously social, Young developed numerous friendships at his Flanders West residence on Darling Street. There, his door was always open to anyone who wanted to chat or needed a ride to the local grocery store. He enjoyed his time sipping a variety of craft beers, slow smoking a cigar and engaging in the art of conversation doing what he did best—building friendships. He will be remembered as having a happy go lucky attitude, and deeply missed by his friends and family.
Young is survived by his brother Donald Eng of Lithia, Florida, and nephew Bland Eng (and his children Brandon and Ava); sister Betty Douglas of Glen Ellyn, Illinois, niece Barbara Gable (and her children Mark (and his daughter Ainhoa) and Jennifer (and her daughter Jessica)), niece Carol Sheetz (and her children Rebecca, Eileen, and Kiara), nephew Wesley Douglas (and his son Spencer), nephew Richard Douglas (and his children Emily and Jessica), and niece Stephanie Ascencio (and her children Victoria and Alexandra); and brother Henry Eng of Wolcott, Connecticut, nephew Tom Eng (and his children Ethan and Bradley), nephew Michael Eng (and his daughter Amelia), and niece Sherrie Shover (and her children Brody and Brooklyn).
