Passed away peacefully on July 17 at Chartwell Niagara (Chateau Gardens) in Niagara-on-the Lake. Born May 21, 1929 in St. Catharines, she was a life-long resident of the city. Loving wife of Graham Claus, married May 24, 1948, having recently celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary. Daughter of the late John B. Lawson (1975) and Geraldine (Hetherington) Lawson (1997). Dear mother of Claudia Niles (Mike) and Julia Claus (Al Schmidt). Devoted Grandmother of Eric, David, Daniel and James. Great-granddaughter Violet was her newest pride and joy. She is survived by her twin sister, Jacqueline Maynes of Kitchener.
Geraldine was a graduate of St. Catharines Teachers College (Prior to Brock University) and taught for ten years at Maywood Public School in St. Catharines. She left teaching in 1976 to take over co-ownership with her husband of Welland Leather Goods in Welland, Ontario. The business was opened in 1941 by her father John. Geraldine retired in 1991 having sold the business. A member of Silver Spire United Church and a life-long member of the former Welland Avenue United Church., Geraldine was very active in the United Church Women.
Geraldine (Gerry) loved to cook, entertain, garden, decorate her home, paint, sew, swim, play bridge and watch her favorite TV shows. Gerry will be remembered for her boundless energy, creativity and her many talents; which she loved to share. She will be truly missed by all her family and friends. A heartfelt thank you to the Personal Support Workers for their wonderful care and kindness during the past six months; also to the staff at Chartwell Niagara for their exceptional care and understanding during Geraldine's short stay. Cremation to take place as wished by Geraldine, followed by a private family inurnment service at the Victoria Lawn Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to join in a celebration of Geraldine's life at a memorial service and luncheon at Silver Spire United Church, 366 St. Paul St. St. Catharines. The service will begin at 11:30 am on Saturday July 26, 2014. Donations to the charity of your choice, in memory of Geraldine, would be appreciated by the family.
