Joan was my mother-in-law for 30 years and I knew her for almost 36 years. She was truly an inspiration. I remember thinking at various points along the way: I hope I have as much energy as she does when I'm in my 70s and 80s. She never tired of helping people, working in her garden, cooking, baking, preserving, canning, volunteering and still having time left over to be with her family that adored her. We live in Edmonton and every time we talked on the phone or when she came here for a visit or we went there, she'd say: I wish we lived closer together. Me too, Joan. I will miss you terribly but one thing that consoles me is knowing that you're in heaven with my husband, your only son, Steve. All my love and admiration forever, Sabine.

Joan was an amazing lady. She always had a kind word and made everyone feel welcome. Every time she reminded me of her Dutch heritage. She was revered by her family. She will be missed.

Joan Vriend, dearly loved partner of Frank Barnsley passed away peacefully on Saturday at HOSPICE Niagara in St. Catharine's. Many of us know Joan through our relationship with Frank. Joan was a gracious and lovely lady and we enjoyed her warm Hospitality at their house on many occasions particularly each year to celebrate Frank's birthday. Frank has been a mentor , role model and friend since he joined the Freewheelers over 20 years ago and when he and Joan decided to spend their senior years together she joined right in.

She and Frank hosted the Mandarin luncheon at Christmas for many years and they also attended every social.

The love, devotion and care they shared for each other could be an inspiration for us all.

We will miss her.
