On November 11, 2023, Olga Holowasz passed away at the age of 90 surrounded by her loving family. Olga (Olya) Horochivsky was born on December 5, 1932 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan to Mykola and Kateryn a Horochivsky (predeceased). They moved to St. Catharines when Olga was still a little girl and she grew up spending a great deal of time within the Ukrainian community there. Olga married Dmytro Holowasz (predeceased) in 1953 and together they had 3 children. Olga loved to entertain, cook, bake (her desserts were legendary), make pysanky, tell stories, and sing. She was part of the choir at the St. George Ukrainian Orthodox Church in St. Catharines, and in her later years she took up making Ukrainian beaded necklaces (or gerdans) and iconography. She had many creative accomplishments, but what she was most proud of was her family. Olga would always say her family was her “millions”. Olga leaves behind her children, Natalia (Joe), Nadya (Myron), Nick (Cathy); grandchildren, Elaina (Eric), Kalyna (Luke), Laura (Nolan), Melissa (Chris), and Jordan (who she shared a birthday with); great-grandchildren, Nevaeh, Easton, Ellis, Maia, Renna, and Dimitri; a sister, Alecia Minosora, as well as many nieces, nephews, and godchildren. She also leaves behind her greatest companion, her cat, Sonechko. Our dearest Mama, Baba , Pra-Baba, Sister, Aunt, Godmother and Friend: you will be greatly missed, but we will all love you as high as the sky, as deep as the ocean, as wide as the world, and to the moon and back… always.
