Died the day after his birthday on September 9th, 2014 at Linhaven Home in St. Catharines. Born in Guelph in 1930, Tom, a proud member of the United Empire Loyalists, is predeceased by his dear wife Mary Kathryn Newman and the mother of his children Dianthe McCarthy Jackson, his beloved parents Elsie (nee Hill) and Charles McCarthy and brother Brian. Tom was a reporter at the St. Catharines Standard for 25 years, served for two terms as President of the Lincoln County Humane Society and was an elected Lincoln County School Board Trustee. Upon retirement from the Standard, Tom achieved his Real Estate Board Brokerage License and opened his own Brokerage Firm. Tom is survived by his loving children Cynthia Watson, Tom (Shelley Stuart) and Jim (Sue Bremner), grandchildren Justin and Stephanie and his cat Susan. Tom will be fondly remembered by longtime friends Donna and Dave Cowan, neighbours Jan and Ben Froese and childhood friend Patrick Toker. Tom was a charming man with dark blue eyes that never lost their twinkle. He had a distinct style and never went out without sporting one of his fine fedoras. He had a keen intellect and an engaging manner. He loved his family and family history. We are grateful to the fabulous, caring staff at the T. Roy Adams Complex Care Centre and his friends there especially Marilyn and Al Danials and family. Thanks also to the St. Catharines General and Welland Dialysis Units.
A gathering and service in Tom’s memory will be held at a later date. Those who wish may make contributions to the Lincoln County Humane Society in lieu of flowers. Arrangements entrusted to the HULSE & ENGLISH FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 75 Church Street, (905-684-6346). On-line tributes may be made at www.hulseandenglish.com.
