Elizabeth "Dorothy" Indelicato beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother and a lifelong resident of St. Louis Missouri passed away on Thursday, June 12, 2025 after suffering a stroke at the age of 81.
Dorothy is survived by her adoring husband of 62 years, Joe Indelicato; her children Joe Indelicato, Jr (Kathie Verace) and Angie (Rick) Boaz; her grandchildren Mattie Indelicato, Caitlin Indelicato, Courtney (Tyler) Vogt, Sami (Curtis) Scott, Tony Indelicato and Jacob Boaz; and great-grandchildren Evie, Lucas, Erikson, Aelita, Nolan and Valkyrie. She was preceded in death by her parents Hugo and Agnes Kern and siblings Lucille Kern, George (Terry) Kern, Mary (George) Holder, and Joan (Art) Schulte. She is also survived by her sisters Agnes Johnson and Kathy (Larry) Inabnit, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Dorothy’s parents owned Kern’s Korner, a confectionary at the corner of Humphrey and Bent in south St. Louis, and it’s there where she met Joe whose brother and sister-in-law rented the upstairs flat. They could hear Dorothy’s beautiful piano playing below and told Joe he needed to meet her. Joe and Dorothy married in 1963 and started their family.
Dorothy’s life was centered on faith, family, friends and fun.
She was a parishioner of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church for 56 years where she spent countless hours volunteering and sharing her many talents as Girl Scout leader, volleyball coach, room mother, guitar choir director, cantor and funeral mass choir member, just to name a few. While her kids were in grade school, and afterwards for as long as she was able, she could always be found in the halls of St. Joan of Arc or at church, selling milk and cooking school lunches in the cafeteria, working booths at the annual parish Homecoming, coordinating music for mass and holiday celebrations, singing in the funeral choir, and making cards for homebound parishioners. Even when she was no longer mobile and living at Laclede Groves, she continued her card ministry from bed, creating handmade birthday cards for friends, family, fellow nursing home residents and staff. Her faith kept her going despite all the health issues she endured; she trusted that God had a plan and that her time on Earth wasn’t finished just yet. She made the best of every day she was given.
Dorothy had several jobs through the years working at the Federal Records Center, Catholic Supply, Nottingham Community School and the Ink Spot but no job brought her greater joy than being a homemaker, a mom and grandma. She adored her kids and grandkids. Sleepovers at grandma’s were always a treat. She made every birthday and holiday special, using her many creative talents to put that extra touch on each celebration whether it was decorating the birthday cake, making a unique birthday present or Halloween costume, planning the homemade pizza party, or coordinating Rob Your Neighbor for Christmas Eve at her house. She loved tradition and created so many lasting memories for her family.
Throughout her life, Dorothy knew how to have fun and was always the social butterfly. It didn’t matter if you were a friend of many years, the server at Denny’s, her medical transport driver, or the cashier at Joann’s Fabrics, she always had a joke to tell and would strike up a conversation making you feel as if you’d known her forever. She loved playing games and going to the casino. She loved music – playing piano, singing and going to concerts. She taught others so many of the crafts she loved including cake decorating, sewing, rubber stamping, card making, scrapbooking and crocheting. She always enjoyed the simple things in life. The next time you see a rainbow or a butterfly, please remember Dorothy.
In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital would be greatly appreciated by her family. www.stjude.org
