It is with deep and profound sadness that the St. Louis Fire Department announces the line-of-duty death of Firefighter Lee Kraus, a 27-year veteran whose life was marked by service, courage, and love for his community.
Firefighter Kraus suffered a medical emergency while on duty on Sunday, June 29, 2025, and passed away on Tuesday, July 1, 2025. His passing leaves a tremendous void in the hearts of his family, friends, and fellow firefighters.
Born with an adventurous spirit and an unwavering dedication to helping others, Lee devoted nearly three decades to protecting the citizens of St. Louis. Known for his steady leadership, sharp instincts, and fierce loyalty to his crew, Lee exemplified what it means to serve with honor.
Beyond the badge, Lee lived life with passion. He cherished traveling the world with his one and only, Kamryn, and his best friend and beloved travel companion, Karen Shebik. Lee loved fishing, hiking, kayaking, and anything he could find for an outdoor adventure. Lee took pleasure in what most would consider unorthodox. From sampling the spiciest and strangest foods imaginable to diving into conversations about every conspiracy theory under the sun (or in a random cave), Lee brought humor, curiosity, and boldness to everything he did.
He was a man who made every moment count. From laughing loudly, loving deeply, and living fully. His presence lit up every room, and his stories could keep people talking for hours. Whether at the firehouse, around a table with friends, or halfway across the globe, Lee’s spirit of adventure and connection never dimmed.
Lee Kraus’s legacy is one of service, loyalty, and a life well-lived. His absence is felt deeply, but his impact will continue through the countless lives he touched.
He is preceded in death by his father, Firefighter Woody Kraus, and survived by his beloved Kamryn, his stepson, Brendan Jeffords (Olivia) and his granddaughter, Molina Jeffords. His very best friend Karen Shebik, Aunt Karen Avret, Cousin Mike Avret, His cherished friends, and former wife and friend Robin Ponciroli. He also leaves behind his entire St. Louis Fire Department family, who will forever carry his legacy forward.
Visitation will be held, Tuesday, July 8th from 3:00 pm - 8:00 pm at Hoffmeister Colonial Mortuary, 6464 Chippewa Street at Watson. Funeral Service will be Wednesday, July 9th, 10:30 am at Hoffmeister Colonial Mortuary.
