Mary had a long life, side by side with her beloved husband John Volas. Together, they were a remarkable example of how a couple should love and support each other. True to her faith, she prayed daily and was deeply devoted to St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church. Alongside her Philoptochos friends, Mary spent her summers preparing food for the Greek Festival. Every Sunday one was assured to see Mary in the exact same pew on the left, participating in communion and holding antidoron with both hands, sure to not let any crumbs go to waste. In recognition of her service and dedication, Mary was named Philoptochos “Woman of the Year.”
Mary Marmigas Volas was born to Christos and Panayiota, who emigrated from Greece by way of Minnesota, eventually settling near Ironton, Missouri. Her parents first worked in the mines before building a life on a beef cattle farm. Mary was raised on the farm, with her childhood shaped by the hardships of the Great Depression and World War II. After graduating from high school with exceptional grades, Mary moved to St. Louis in pursuit of greater economic opportunities.
It was at a St. Nicholas Sunday evening dance that Mary met a handsome Greek American stationed at Scott Air Force Base. John Volas asked the beautiful Mary Marmigas to dance, marking the beginning of a magnificent partnership that would last many years.
Mary had a fruitful career at Kuna Meats as an accounts payables auditor. She was well known for her keen attention to detail and took satisfaction in uncovering discrepancies between product deliveries and billing.
She was a dutiful and compassionate sibling. Mary took pride in her brother Nick, a heavily decorated World War II Veteran, and dedicated her retirement to the loving care of her sister and best friend, Dena.
Mary's life was defined by her commitment to her husband, her family, her church, and her community. She will be remembered for her faith, her loyalty, and the example she set for those who knew and loved her.
