Thelma Marie Guittar

Thelma Marie Guittar, beloved mother, sister, aunt, great aunt, cousin, and friend, passed away peacefully 09/19/2026, fortified with the sacraments of Holy Mother Church, at Mary Queen and Mother Center at the age of 81.

Born the fourth of five children to Norman Guittar, Sr. and Elise (Hines) Guittar on February 26, 1945, she lived in Maplewood, the Central West End, and Shrewsbury.

When she was 19 years old, Thelma gave birth to her daughter whom she named Theresa Guittar after her older sister whom she was very close to, and who contributed to her earning the reputation as a mischievous child. Well past those wild days, she has been dubbed “Amazing Great Aunt.”

When she was 20 years old, Thelma gave birth to her son, Steven Todd Bruno.

She lost both children during the Baby Scoop Era, and was reunited with her son Steven Todd Bruno when she was 48 and with her daughter, Jules Blair (Theresa Guittar) when she was 74.

She worked in St. Mary’s Hospital cafeteria and as a licensed cosmetologist.

She built a loving life enjoying cooking, dancing, and singing with friends and family including karaoke hosted by her sister, Gert, for 16 years and attended by her brother, Norman, and other family and friends including her daughter. They were known to frequently dance to “Mack the Knife” or “Twist and Shout.”

Her family celebrated her 80th birthday in the Lally Room at Mary Queen and Mother Center, with dancing and a buffet including a chocolate fountain she loved, that had been set up by her brother Norman.

Her daughter, Jules, shared her love of dogs, frequently bringing her previous dog, Luka, and her current dog, Beau, to see her. Beau spent much time being a comfort to her when she was on hospice.

Thelma will be remembered for her loyalty, her gentleness, her deep faith, and her unexpected sense of humor.

She was preceded in death by her son, Steven Todd Bruno; her parents, Norman Guittar, Sr. and Elise (Hines) Guittar; her siblings, Sister Assunta Guittar, FSM, Norman (Dolores) Guittar Jr., Theresa (Harry) Padgett, and her great-nephew Benjamin Rombach.

She is survived by her daughter, Jules Blair; her sister, Gert (Dan) Booher, her sister-in-law, Dolores (Norman) Guittar, her nieces and nephews, her great nieces and nephews, her extended family, and many wonderful friends from Dubourg House/Mary Queen and Mother Center.

She has donated her body to SLU Nursing School in honor of her eldest sibling, Sister Assunta Guittar, FSM, RN.

Memorial visitation will be held at Hoffmeister Colonial Mortuary, 6464 Chippewa St., St. Louis, Missouri 63109 on Friday, October 2, 2026, from 4 to 8. The Memorial Mass will be held in the Chapel at Mary Queen and Mother Center, Saturday, October 10, 2026 at 10:15am.
