Ms. Assink you were my favorite teacher and I'm grateful for the chance to have been in your class. I wish I could have made it to the wake but I wasn't notified until it was too late. I hope you are in a good place.

to my friends who weren't able to be at her celebration...

the room was standing room only. early on a lot of right-on deb music played quietly: some rock, some latin american, and very significantly sheryl crow singing "all i really wanna do is have some fun," which virginia and i agreed would have brought deb to her feet.

knowing that deb refused to help tony plan her celebration, i can only say that she must have been confident tony would know what to do when the time came. she just didn't tell him that. it was magnificent, tony.

they played "ave maria" as they tucked deb into the cushions of her coffin and closed it. later we heard elvis sing "i come to the garden alone," a song that dominates my family history. my parents often sang that song as a duet at funerals in my church.

her friend andrea spoke and i don't know where she got the strength, but what a grand tribute to deb as a friend! but even greater, tony spoke to his mom, in front of us all... he threatened to tell inappropriate bartender stories, but he went on to tell us this: he took care of his mom unconditionally for 6 months. she did the same for him for 31 years. he didn't think his sacrifice was notable.

the last song was by the singer who plays the ukele and sings "somewhere over the rainbow," but this version incorporated "what a wonderful world." perfect.

till we meet again, my friend,

lynne with love
