James Almon Olmstead Sr., 81, a lifelong resident of St. Paul, MN, passed away peacefully on March 5th, 2025, at Regions Hospital in St. Paul, the same hospital where he dedicated 50 years of his life. Jim was born on July 11th, 1943, to Catherine and Earl Olmstead, the eighth of 11 children. He was known for his stubbornness, sarcasm, sense of humor, loving nature, and his unwavering belief that he was always right (and, often, he was). Jim was a master at cribbage, ensuring that the card table and cribbage board were set up before every holiday. He cherished the game and even managed to enjoy one last round with his grandson, James, in the hospital before his passing. Beyond cribbage, Jim found joy in puzzles, crossword books, gambling at the casino, and watching *Wheel of Fortune* and *Judge Judy*, often engaging in spirited debates with the TV. Friday nights at Savoy's were a tradition he looked forward to, along with spending quality time with family and friends.
Jim is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Leota; his sons, James Jr., Jerry, and Michael; his parents; several siblings; and his loyal dog, Rocky.
He is survived by his daughter, Debbra McClanahan; son, Jimmy Vansell; his grandchildren: Kimberly (Jim) Hall, Krista Bayne, Jennifer (Matt) Dahl, James Vansell, Joseph (Jurney) Hunt, Andrea (Zach) Dahl, and Bailey Buck; and his great-grandchildren: Maia, Jaxson, Austin, Carson, Cameron, and Adam. Jim’s family and friends will forever remember his humor, love, and the strong presence he brought to their lives. He will be missed deeply, but his legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, March 26, 2025 at Wulff Funeral Home, St. Paul with visitation beginning at 1:00 pm.
