Mr. Mauer was my favorite teacher..he always joked with us and we had a handshake called the Walley shake that we did everyday..RIP Mr.Mauer..I will miss you! I didn't even no he passed away until i just googled him now..sad

My father in law, Bill Ellis, passed away St. Patricks Day. Many years ago,  before I had heard of Joe, Bill used to tell me a story of how he used to play pickup hockey with the Mauer brothers back in the 30's. As he would tell it apparently Bill raised the puck and smacked Johnny in the leg. I guess that was a no, no and Jake and the others chased Bill off the playground. It was, I'm sure,
           an insignificant moment for the Mauers but it was something for my father to talk about later. This was at Galtier or Hamline playground. He always spoke fondly of those old days so God bless you all. It must have been an all-star game, back in the Midway, whenever they took the ice. Thanks!

Throughout my business career I have heard many ways to call a business process by another name. Many times I thought back to Mr Mauer's interpretation of the same process and thought "Thats not new!!" He called it the way it was. Supply Chain Managers, DSD Global logistics Managers......Mr Mauer would have said what they were, "Rack Jobbers" Thank you for the lessons and Rest in Peace Mr Mauer.

I had John as a coach and teacher at Hill and he was the best there was in both capacities. He was a huge reason we had a very sucessful year on the football field in the '64-'65 season. He was my friend later in life and next to my Dad, there was no one I admired more. He made us all better people for having known him. I'm unable to attend the celebration of life for John, but you know I'm there in spirit. My thoughts are with you Mrs. Mauer, Tim, Paul and especially you Dawg.

I was a player on the '65 football team and Coach Mauer was a big reason we had such a great year. Best coach I ever had and a man I admired more than I can ever express. I got to be a friend of John's and wouldn't trade those days for anything. He made everyone one he met a better person for having known him. John was my Jr. high English teacher at Humboldt Junior Highschool. He will be greatly missed by all the students there whom he touched and learned from him not just school stuff but life lessons as well. He was always a happy and funny guy. And greeting people with "Hi there Buddy." RIP Mr. Mauer. All my thoughts and praers go to the family in this time of need.

We lost a teacher, mentor, fiend, & gentleman.  He was an inspiration in the classroom, on the athletic field, and in life.  In General Business, he never accepted an "I don't know" or "Can't."  He stressed the basics and good character.  We will all miss this living legend, who set the standard for all to emulate.  We will miss him, but in all of us he touched, his legacy lives on. John and My Uncle Bill McManus played on quite a few teams in the forties and fifties.I played on teams with his son Paul at Cretin in the sixties. He was a wonderful man from a great family.

My condolences to the Mauer family.  John was a teacher of mine at Hill, and later in life became of customer of mine in the floor covering business.  He was a great man that touched many lives.

The Mauer Family was a great St. Paul group who were led by Johnny and I think without a doubt that he may be one of the finest Minnesota's athletes and certainly one of the finest gentlemen I have known.  He along with Dick Siebert and Angie Guiliani were the pillars behind many aspiring basbebal players in about 1945 or 46 at Concordia College near Dunning field and will always be remembered as a real firt class gentleman and family man. I have fond memories of John playing town team baseball in St Paul Park with my brother and how entertaining John was always chatting and calling everyone by the uniform number. My brother John's number was 10 and that is how he referred to him. He was special to many, many people.

Emma and I miss you already Grandpa.  Everynight before she goes to bed, she makes a wish at the stars and says "I wish for Grandpa John that he watches over us from Heaven".  Until we see you again...we love you.

I was a student of his in the mid 80's at H-M. I remember getting my tests back from him. "Schneider, can do!" as in you can do better, he would say. Thanks for the life lessons Master!

Mr. Mauer was my freshman phy-ed teacher at Hill High School in 1960. Four years later when I started teaching at Hill, we became good friends. I have so many great memories of John. He was a true Renaissance man.

Coach Mauer was not only my football and baseball coach he was my mentor and inspiration. He also was my econ teacher but also taught me about life.  Coach Mauer was a GREAT person...

John played baseball with my uncle, Vincent Plumbo.  In fact my grandmother used to talk about "that Mauer boy" and how he loved eating her meatballs and spaghetti.  You all have wonderful and many memories to keep near and dear to your hearts!

Mr. Mauer, yes, the Ol' Master... filled with a sense of wit, wisdom, and how can one truly define him as he was a true Legend...  I never had him as a teacher; but the kids in my class have shared so many a story and when he would come to the Attendance Office or to the Main Office when I was student working he had such an aura around him - its just hard to put into words...  He was in a class shared by possibly by one other that I can think of...

Mr Mauer - I would have certainly enjoyed taking a class offered by you.  But it was not to be... But, I know the world as a whole is a much better place; because you gained and had the respect of so many peers as well as students at HM.

John was my first football coach at Hill in 1963.  He was hard nosed, and honest, and He stressed fundamentals.  As the years went by, We ran into each other, here and there.
