Born on November 11, 1930 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, she was one of the last of her generation. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Roy Edward Sherrett; her parents, Charles Howard Evans and Anna Hallam Evans; her brother Charles; and her sisters Doris, Audrey, and Janet. She is survived by her sons, Todd and Craig; her grandchildren Jason, Leslie, and Madison; her great grandchildren, Eian and Natalie; and her nieces Christine, Linda, and Maryl.
Thel attended the University of Pittsburgh and graduated with a degree in Education after which she taught 2nd grade for two years in the North Hills of Pittsburgh. Her marriage to Roy, a USAF pilot, prompted a change in venue as he was transferred to Tripoli, Libya in North Africa. After Thel moved to Tripoli, she found an open teaching position at the base elementary school and taught 3rd grade for 2 years. Upon returning to the states, she continued to move at the whim of the Air Force with assignments all over the country. One of her favorite assignments was Alaska where she ran the base thrift store and learned to ski.
She loved to be busy, often knitting, crocheting, or doing needlepoint. She bowled with a 16 pound ball and had two lapel pins for 200 point games. She loved to play bridge, often hosting large bridge gatherings in her home.
After Roy retired from the Air Force, they decided to return to their ancestral homeland, Pittsburgh where they spent the next 30 years. She was a frequent substitute teacher, was a dedicated volunteer at Passavant Hospital in the North Hills, and had season tickets to the Pittsburgh Pirates where she and Roy would spend the afternoon with a bag of peanuts.
Roy’s passing in 2014 and the COVID lockdowns in 2020 made the next 12 years difficult but she took it in stride. She took trips to visit her sons in California and North Carolina and finally made the decision to relocate - one last time - to Minnesota where she had dinner every Sunday evening with her two great grandchildren. She will be missed at the dinner table.
Thel was a very private individual and had very few remaining friends and family. Therefore, there will be no memorial services in Pittsburgh or White Bear Lake. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the Disabled American Veterans Charitable Service Trust, cst.dav.org.
Her final resting place will be with her husband at Arlington National Cemetery. No date has been set.
