From an early age, she was known for her beauty, intelligence, strength, and charisma, and was crowned Miss Barranquitas in 1964. In 1963, she met the love of her life, Eduardo A. Torres-Ortiz, whom she married on January 1, 1965. For more than 61 years, they shared a beautiful journey of love, commitment, and faith, building a family rooted in Christian values.
Amneris devoted her life to education, earning a bachelor's degree in Education from Interamerican University of Puerto Rico and a master's degree in Education from American University. For 40 years, she served as an educator in Puerto Rico, working as a kindergarten teacher, university professor, and elementary school principal. Affectionately known as "Mrs. Berríos," she left a lasting impression on generations of students and colleagues. Many of her former students followed in her footsteps and became educators themselves. Her remarkable ability to remember her students, even decades later, reflected the love and dedication she brought to her calling. After retiring in 1999, she continued teaching for five additional years in Gwinnett County, Georgia, before dedicating herself fully to her husband and family.
Above all her professional accomplishments, her greatest pride and blessing was her family. She was a devoted wife, an extraordinary mother, and a loving grandmother and great-grandmother. Strong, protective, and firm when necessary, she was always filled with tenderness and unconditional love. She deeply cherished her parents and brothers, especially her beloved father, Vitín. She enjoyed cooking, spending time with loved ones, and gathering with her sisters in Christ. Her beautiful smile, joyful spirit, and generosity will forever remain in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing her.
As a member of the Iglesia Bautista Hispanoamericana, Amneris lived a life of unwavering faith and devotion to God. Her faith was the rock of her family and the foundation of her teachings. One of her favorite Bible passages was Psalm 121:1–2:
"I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth."
Amneris is survived by her beloved husband, Eduardo A. Torres-Ortiz; her children, Víctor E. Torres, Amneris A. Torres, and Eduardo M. Torres; her daughters-in-law, Wanda and Yahayra; and her son-in-law, Geoffrey. She also leaves behind her nine grandchildren: Anette, Bryan, Andrea, Amanda, Victor, Eddie, Brandon, Sebastian, and Nicolas; and her seven great-grandchildren: Greyson, Oliver, Gabriella, Kai, Eliana, Brody, and Gianna. She is also survived by her brothers, Ángel M. Berríos Sierra and Víctor A. Berríos Sierra, along with numerous relatives, friends, former students, and brothers and sisters in Christ.
The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the hospice and palliative care teams, her church family, and all relatives and friends who surrounded Amneris with love, prayers, and support during her final days.
Her life was a testament to faith, her calling was to teach, and her greatest legacy was the love she planted in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.
To many, she was Mrs. Berríos, an extraordinary educator. To us, she will forever be Mamama, the wonderful woman God blessed us with.
Rest in peace, Mamama. Your love and teachings will live forever in our hearts, until the day we meet again in the presence of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
