Lie Ay Lin, 81, passed away on September 30, 2026, at Emory St. Joseph’s Hospital. A beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, she was “Ma” to her children, “Nai Nai” to her grandsons Gregory and Daniel, and “Ah Ma” to her granddaughters Emily and Erika. To her husband, Suandy Chang, she was “Ah Lau,” his affectionate name for her meaning “old pal.”
Born in Bagan Siapi Api, Indonesia, on October 4, 1945, to the late Lie Beng Seng and the late Sun Kai Tie, Ay Lin was the fourth of eleven children. She moved to Medan to attend school, accompanied by her maternal grandmother, with whom she shared much of her childhood. Medan remained the city she loved most, a place where she could find her own way around and enjoy her independence.
Her family remembers Mama most of all for her kindness and gentle nature. She was deeply loved by her children and grandchildren, and the familiar names they called her carry a lifetime of affection.
Ay Lin is survived by her husband, Suandy Chang; her children and their spouses, Isa Chang and Lilik Tan, Irwan Chang and Julyana Tanudjaja, and Suryani Chang and Jonathan Siao Him Fa; and her grandchildren, Emily Tan, Gregory Chang, Daniel Chang, and Erika Siao Him Fa.
Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance of Ay Lin on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at South Forsyth Memorial Chapel, 3545 Peachtree Parkway, Suwanee, Georgia.
Her gentle heart made our family a home. Her kindness lives on in each of us.
