born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on August 26, 1920, to Albert Lee Loomis and Frances
Markham Loomis. He graduated from Central High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1937.
Al was a veteran of WWII serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He graduated from UCLA
in 1947 where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity.
While in the service he met Carolyn Hanley at the Tampa Yacht & Country Club and
were married at the Bayshore Baptist Church in Tampa in 1949. He worked for the United
States Steel Corporation for 30 years beginning in Phoenix, AZ. He was later transferred to Los Angeles, CA, Salt Lake City, UT; Bettendorf, IA, and Chicago, IL. While living in Glen Ellyn, IL, Carolyn passed away in 1973.
Al married Mickey Rase in Tampa in 1974. They lived in Illinois until his retirement
in 1982 when they moved to Tampa. He worked for Smith and Associates Real Estate and was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church and Tampa Yacht & Country Club. Mickey passed away in 2017.
In his younger years, Al enjoyed playing golf and tennis and listening to his Big Band
record collection. In later years, after losing his sight, he loved listening to Rays
baseball, Florida Gator football games and the Library of Congress Audiobooks
which he looked forward to receiving weekly in the mail.
Al was a true gentleman. He was kind and caring and a loyal husband and loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He will be remembered for his positive attitude and warm smile.
He is survived by his children, Lynn Fluharty and husband Stephen of Tampa, Mark
Loomis and wife Maggie Bras of Toronto, Canada, Martha Pfefferman and husband
Mark of Glen Ellyn, IL, and Michael Rase of Tampa; grandsons, Thomas Fluharty and
wife Kelly of Tampa, Matthew Fluharty and Julia Bye of Tampa, Matthew Loomis and Joshua Loomis of New York City, NY, and their mother Heidi Loomis of Providence, R.I., Matthew Pfefferman of Glen Ellyn, IL, and Mitchell Pfefferman of Glen Ellyn, IL; great-granddaughters, Parker Fluharty and Brett Fluharty of Tampa; nephews, Cliff Gibbons and wife Terri of McLean, VA, Mark Gibbons of Tampa, and Tim Gibbons of Tampa.
A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, November 21 at 11:30 am at St. John’s
Episcopal Church, 906 S. Orleans Avenue, Tampa, Florida 33606 with The Very Rev. Charles
E. Connelly officiating. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall.
