Barbara Ann MacArthur, born in North Scituate, went home to the Lord peacefully on the evening of March 6, 2022 at the age of 87 in Tampa, Florida, where she had lived for more the forty years. Barbara was the daughter of the late Gordon F. Hunter and Beatrice (Milley) Hunter, both of North Scituate.
She was the devoted mother of Alison G. Pendrick of Wesley Chapel, Florida and Hugh H. MacArthur and Lakey MacArthur of Wellesley, Massachusetts. Barbara was the cherished Gram of Kayleigh Pendrick of Norfolk, Virginia, Sydney Pendrick of Columbia, South Carolina, Hunter MacArthur, Thomas MacArthur, Jed MacArthur and Charlotte MacArthur of Wellesley, Massachusetts. She was the beloved aunt of Terie Diat of Sag Harbor, New York, Gregory Whitaker of Stoneham, Massachusetts, and Suzanne Nolan of Stoneham, Massachusetts.
Barbara was a gentle but strong soul, and her smiles and laughter will be remembered by her family and many friends. A graduate of Scituate High School in 1952, she was proud to be head cheerleader for the football team. She frequently held court with friends at the Satuit Grill in Scituate Harbor. Both of her children were born in Scituate and spent their formative years there. Barbara spent her working life as an x-ray technician, first at Mass Memorial Hospital in Boston, and later before retiring as the head technician for a network of Cigna Health Centers in Tampa, Florida in 2000. While she loved her work, Barbara’s greatest love was her family. She was completely devoted to her children and grandchildren in every respect. Everyone in her family knew they were loved, whether they lived down the street or a thousand miles away. An occasion was never forgotten. Cards always arrived as did gifts, emails, texts and calls.
Barbara had many talents, including making clothing, sewing just about any craft, creating jewelry, and baking delicious cookies and treats. Family and friends were always the grateful beneficiaries.
During her time in Tampa, Barbara also perfected another hobby, the art of discount shopping. She was always one who relished the chase of finding a high quality item, and not just at a slight discount, but at 50% or more off the price she might pay for the exact same item in another store. The joy she had as she drove around her favorite haunts near Carrollwood Village was always palpable when another treasure or gift came home.
Barbara’s other great passion was sports. In younger years, her interests were the Red Sox, especially listening to Ted Williams play on the radio with her father, and a bit later the Bruins, where Bobby Orr was the star. During her time in Tampa, Barbara became passionate about football. She attended Tampa Bay Buccaneers games faithfully for more than twenty years, and also had great passion for the Florida Gators and the South Florida Bulls. When football wasn’t in season, Barbara could be found tuning into the current week’s golf tournament to see if one of her favorite players was in contention.
We will miss receiving her love, trying to return it, and having the opportunity to spend more precious hours in her company. But, we take comfort that Barbara is looking down on us from heaven, and that she is in the Lord’s peace.
A funeral service celebrating Barbara’s eternal life will be held at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, at 79 Denton Road in Wellesley, Massachusetts on April 9, 2022 at 10:00am. The service is open to family and friends. Internment will be at Fairview Cemetery in Scituate.
