Clyde Lawrence (“Larry”) Stagg died peacefully in his sleep on June 20. Larry was born in Tampa on May 22, 1935 to Milton and Clyda Stagg and attended Gorrie Elementary, Wilson Middle School and Plant High School. He attended the University of Florida, where he earned his Journalism and Law degrees.
In Gainesville, Larry was a member of Florida Blue Key, Chancellor of the Honor Court, and President of Sigma Nu Social Fraternity. Most importantly, he met the love of his life, Betsy Anne Barron, and they married in August of 1959.
Larry had a long and distinguished legal career, serving as President of the Hillsborough County Bar Association and Board Member of the Florida Bar Association. He received numerous accolades, including being honored as the first recipient of the Hillsborough County Bar Association’s “Outstanding Lawyer” award. He was very active in the community, serving as President of Palma Ceia Golf & Country Club and Chairman of the Tampa Sports Authority, in addition to numerous charity boards.
Larry loved golf, traveling, and all Tampa Bay and Gator sports. He was a Bucs season ticket holder since the inaugural season in 1976. Larry was a loving husband and wonderful father, and the grandchildren loved their “Pop Pop”.
Larry is survived by his wife Betsy Barron Stagg; his children, Sharon Nye (John), Brian Stagg, and Stephen Stagg (Micky); and three grandchildren, Carly and Samantha Stagg and Andrew Nye.
The visitation will be at Christ the King Church at 10 AM, Saturday June 25, with a funeral mass at 11 AM and a reception at Palma Ceia following. Funeral arrangements are being managed by Blount & Curry. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Bay Area Legal Services or a charity of your choice.
