Growing up on the Mississippi Gulf Coast in the 70's/80's with Doug and our close group of friends was anything but dull. Doug and I managed to make it to States for mixed doubles when we were in 8th/9th grades. Jenny, the #1 player on our team, was on the court with a scholarship hinging on her winning States when it was discovered my birth certificate was not valid and the entire team was disqualified. As many of you have mentioned, Doug kept his humor at a time when we were both terrified. He first instructed me "to run" and then he decided we should hitch hike to the bus station before anyone else on the team could find us. In the end, we rode back with the coach he had nicknamed "Oopy Ding". On the long ride home, Doug found muscle relaxer in his bag and thought that would help relax our tensions. We proceeded to put it over our entire bodies forgetting it was on our hands before wiping our eyes. Soon neither of us could open our eyes completely, and laughed the rest of the way home. Even in our tennis crisis, Doug managed to make us both laugh and find humor in the situation.
We are all so lucky to have known him at different points in our lives. I will always remember fondly the high school days of sailing, water skiing and tennis with Doug & David and the rest of our gang, but always be so very sad knowing Doug is no longer with us. Godspeed on your next journey Doug and thank you for always spreading happiness.

To Doug's family and friends I offer my condolence.

Doug and I were high school classmates. I remember well his kindness, intelligence and sense of humor. I have thought
of Doug often over the years and it always made me smile. I am very sorry for your loss.

Our hearts are breaking here in Memphis with the loss of our grand-son, our nephew, and our cousin. Doug brought so much joy into our lives and the thought of not having him with us is almost too much to bear. I grieve knowing I will never again have him sidle up to me at Thanksgiving right before we ate and whisper to me, "Aunt Sarah, save me a seat next to you so we can talk." And of course I would, for we always had a lot to talk about. Oh, how I'm going to miss that, and oh, how I miss already this wonderful nephew of mine.
To Jinky, David and Donnie we wish so much we could be there with you now in Tampa. But please know we are with you in spirit and in our shared sorrow. May God's comfort and peace be with you tomorrow and in the days ahead. Remember that we love you. Remember that we all loved Doug and always will.

To the Underwood Family and Members of Banker Lopez Gassler P.A.

Our hearts are heavy over the loss of Doug. I was blessed to know Doug when I was a part of both Fowler White and Banker Lopez Gassler. I saw Doug many times when I first arrived at work in the morning. I would have to walk past Doug’s car on my way into the building from the garage. He always had a smile or a kind word. I was able to get know over the years and see how great a lawyer he was and how much he truly cared about others. Doug was well talented and well respected. When it was time for a little fun at the office Doug was there ready to join in. I know we are hurting over Doug’s loss, yet we can gain some comfort knowing that God gave us the chance to be a part of Doug’a life.. My thoughts and prayers are with Doug’s family and my former co-workers at Banker Lopez Gassler. I know not only the legal profession is a little sadder knowing Doug is not here with us, but so are those who were blessed to have known him. Rest In Peace Doug!

Doug, you will be missed dearly by many. Thanks for being such a positive and happy force in this world. Thanks for knowing how to bring a good level of humor to most any situation. Thanks for insisting that life be celebrated and finding the drinks to do so. Thanks for your warm spirit, your charming southern accent, and your gentlemanly manners (except for when some well timed snarky comment delivered with you signature dry Tennessee intonation could not be resisted--and was well appreciated by everyone who heard it). I have not had contact in years but will always remember the fun times in law school, the study abroad program in the former Yugoslavia, and our years as young lawyers in Tampa. Know you were treasured by many. May you rest in peace. God bless you, Doug.
